Printmaking was fundamental to Pablo Picasso's artistic vision. Over his long career, he made well over 2,000 printed images, focusing on the intaglio techniques of etching, engraving, drypoint and aquatint, as well as on lithography and linoleum cut. This publication, published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, explores Picasso's creative process in printmaking starting in the early years of the twentieth century with his Blue and Rose periods, and extending up to the last years of his life. Divided into 12 thematic sections, the book presents highlights from the Museum's extraordinary collection of Picasso's prints. These include such celebrated masterworks as “The Minotauromachy” and “The Weeping Woman” from the 1930s, as well as evolving states that reveal how Picasso's imagery developed. One example of such metamorphosis is seen in a series of lithographs from the 1940s in which a progression is established from the realistic depiction of a bull to one that is completely abstract and captured in just a few lines. Other prints reveal changing interpretations of the women in Picasso's life, who served both as artistic subjects and as catalytic forces for his creativity. Filled with full-page illustrations accompanied by extended captions, A Picasso Portfolio features an essay by Deborah Wye, Chief Curator of Prints and Illustrated Books at MoMA, and introductions to each thematic section. The book concludes with a chronology and bibliography focusing on Picasso's printmaking.

A unique collection of Picasso's sketches and prints

I saw this special exhibit of Picasso's lesser known sketch and print work at the MOMA this April and wanted to get the book in order to remember it. I resisted buying it in the Museum Store because I knew it would be cheaper on Amazon and it was! Anyway, the art in this collection shows Picasso's range and his many interests. It is especially interesting to see his cubist style in development as you look at the works in this collection. If you're a Picasso-lover, you'll be glad you got your hands on this book because it lets you see a different side of his work. If you're not a huge Picasso fan, the strikingly beautiful prints in this collection may win you over!

A Great Textbook!

My daughter and I love working with this geometry textbook for homeschool. Like all the Saxon math texts, it does an excellent job of ensuring mastery of all topics. It also includes lots of Algebra review in each lesson so that those skills aren't forgotten while we do geometry. We recommend getting the Solutions manual as well - there are lots of higher level questions and it's nice to compare our thoughts with the experts.

Finally the Saxon Math sequence is complete

For years a succession of Saxon publishers has honored the view of series creator John Saxon that (1) Geometry should not be a separate course, but instead, middle and high school students should be exposed to Geometry in bits and pieces across several years of their math studies, and (2) that the traditional core of classical Geometry, Euclidian logic and specifically "two column proofs," are unimportant. (Yes, there is a lesson on proofs in the Saxon Algebra 2 text, but if you blinked, you missed it.)

For just as many years, teachers have bought a Geometry text from another source (Jacobs in our case), depriving the Saxon publisher of a business opportunity and interrupting the instructional flow of students raised on Saxon. At last, the Saxon publisher du jour, Harcourt, has introduced this new text. It is excellent. It presents all of the traditional content, and presents it well, preserving the Saxon method of presentation, nightly problem sets, and continuous cumulative review.

John Saxon is turning over in his grave, but the students he has indoctrinated in a 13-year sequence of consistent instruction and practice no longer have to take a year off.

Saxon always delivers

This is my eleventh year home schooling, and we've used Saxon math for six of those years. I wish I'd used them from the beginning. Saxon's approach is very methodical. Baby steps to learn new material, while constantly reviewing previously learned concepts. Lots of word problems and deciphering what they're asking you to figure out, which helps when kids get to high school and things like chemistry and physics. Two of my kids absolutely love the Saxon approach and do their work willingly. One of them hates the constant review, complains that it takes too long to do a lesson, won't ask for help when she gets stumped, and just generally dislikes the whole program. I make her do it anyway, because she's learning in spite of herself. The Saxon Teacher cds are an excellent companion to the textbook, especially if you are less than confident about teaching math to your kids.

About the Author

Peter Cook is the founder of Archigram, the former Director of the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), London and previous Professor of Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London. A pivotal figure within the global architectural world for over half a century, in 2007 he was knighted by The Queen for his services to architecture. A Royal Academician, he is a Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et Lettres of the French Republic. He is currently a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art, London. Professorships include those at the Royal Academy, University College London and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Städelschule) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. In 2010, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from Lund University in Sweden. Cook is, with Colin Fournier, the architect of the Kunsthaus Graz. He is a director of CRAB Studio in London with Gavin Robotham, which is currently building the new Law Faculties and Central Administration Buildings for Vienna University and the Soheil Abedian School of Architecture for Bond University in Australia.

A few decent pictures in a sea of babble

To start with, let me clarify that this is not a book about architectural drawing. It is a book about rendering ideas visually using every type of media you can imagine. So for every example of a drawing there are about ten examples of paintings, models, and an abundance of the typical modern 3D models gone horribly wrong. Add to this Cook's inability to clearly state any point, and you have a pretty bad example of an architectural drawing book.

Here's a quick example of the kind of twisted verbosity you'll have to wade through while reading this book:

"If it is the recurrent thesis of this book that drawing - of every kind - is a motor that absorbs imagination and converts it into usable or transferable information or inspiration, thus self-consciousness is but another form of evaluation."

Ignore the terrible structuring and obvious lack of logical thinking, and you get a statement about how drawing is a way to capture and transfer information. And this was one of Cook's attempts to clarify himself! You can only imagine how badly the rest of the book reads.

I found that Cook's attempt is just an exercise in pretentious slog of the type you'd hear spewing from some theorist's mouth at a black-tie exhibit. There are comparatively few visual examples given for the volume of text, and some examples are profoundly worthwhile (Arthur Beresford Pite, Neil Denari, Hans Poelzig) while the vast majority simply are not.

This is my second attempt at reading an Architectural Design (AD) series book and trying to make sense of it or find anything useful to take away from it. Both attempts have been failures. I have a third one coming, and I'm now starting to really worry about it.

Architects' Sketchbooks by Will Jones and Narinder Sagoo

The first book is an excellent primer on the reasoning and methods behind visually rendering ideas and observations. The second book is a compendium of architectural renderings, mostly in crude form, showing the formation of ideas without letting the book's text get in the way. Go forth, learn, and be inspired. And if you want vacuous babble then there's plenty of that online, so there's no need to buy this book.

Author's Writing Style Poses Challenges

I was intrigued with the idea behind this book--"the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture." Unfortunately, I found the text extremely difficult to understand without reading every sentence a couple of times! This was truly disappointing. I finally just gave up and glanced through the images which really wasn't that useful since they don't mean as much when it is so difficult to understand the accompanying text.

I do think there is a small select group of people who may enjoy and benefit from this book. I'm just not in that group.

Good pictures - but text is a doublethink nightmare.

Although this book includes some interesting drawings, the text is a convoluted, un-inspiring doublethink nightmare. I found a few of the drawings to be very interesting, but when I looked into the text to see why the author included them, there was nothing of interest. Check it out in a library before adding this one to your own.

The writer was two years old when he and his mother were captured by Japanese soldiers. For the next three years, he was imprisoned in a concentration camp near Shanghai, China. After repatriation to Britain in 1945, he lived with a variety of relatives. At age nine, he moved to South Africa and, for the next eight years, was educated at boarding schools. The regime at one particular school was harsh; he had to elude the attentions of predatory, cruel teachers. The country was then ruled by a Calvinist Afrikaner elite who embraced the concept of white supremacy; they believed 'non-whites' would always be 'hewers of wood and carriers of water' (as their Bible foretold). The world knew this system of government as apartheid, and it persisted for 45 years, until Nelson Mandela was freed. This memoir draws a picture of what it was like to live as a boy in that era. And how the experience shaped the writer as a young adult.

About the Author
Brian Clewly Johnson is an Englishman who was born in China and grew up in South Africa. At age 33, for reasons both political and personal, he left South Africa for good. In Britain, he worked for many years at a multinational advertising agency. His profession enabled him to travel worldwide. In 2002, he moved to the US, becoming an American citizen in 2008. He lives at a beach house in Amagansett, New York. He is the father of four children but is known as 'Oupa' to his five grandchildren. In 2004, he published a work of fiction, 'Deep Memory'.

Bareing the soul

Writing about yourself is incredibly hard. How much do you tell? What will your family think about some of your deeper revelations? Brian Johnson seems to have bared all in this memoir of his first twenty years on this earth. But has he? Given a sniff of hidden secrets, the human condition cries out for more. I think Johnson has done a good job and told his reader just enough. He is a very good writer and while the book is a brief read it is a fascinating one.

I bought an SRM before I bought this book and I could quickly see that it would transform the way I train. However I felt like I lacked in a lot of areas "how can I analyze the data?", "how can I build a training system?", "what are my strengths?". I had already read Joe Friel's book which is great for basic training and periodization but does not go into that much depth on how to actually use a power meter. A power meter is a complex tool and if you don't know how to use it won't benefit you that much. This book tells you how to use the power meter to figure out what kind of rider you are, find your weaknesses, very good suggested exercises and teaches you how to use the tools to their full extent. Combined with Joe's book you end up with an amazing combination. The only complaint I have about it is their focus on how great WKO+ is (a software they develop), however if you've read this book you'll know enough to be able to use any other software (I personally use Golden Cheetah). I'd recommend a power meter to any serious cyclist and without this book getting a power meter is a waste of money. The Cyclist's Training Bible
