A Marvellously Informative Resource For All Pianists!
By Raymond Vacchino
As a pianist, teacher, adjudicator and examiner I ocassionally find myself frustrated by the fact that I can't remember off hand the name, key, opus number or a particular fact about a work when I absolutely need too!
Maurice Hinson once again comes to the rescue for people like myself and others! The Guide is wonderfully laid out and provides pertinent facts about nearly 2,000 solo piano compositions by well known and the lesser-known composers. The information is specific and to the point, without all the non-essential material which is exactly what I need when grasping for information in the middle of a competition or when asked a question in a workshop about an obscure work or composer!
All bases are covered in this edition. For students, new, and even seasoned teachers, Hinson provides precise, formidable insight on a composer's complete compositions, as well as pianistic, interpretative, stylistic and characteristic approaches.
Overall, "The Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire", is virtually a "Pianist's Bible."

The Best Guide To Solo Piano Literature
By Franklin Howell
"Essential," "Indispensable," "Invaluable," "Crucial." Those are a few of the labels often applied to this remarkable book. Currently in its third edition, Maurice Hinson's "Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire" is still the most sought-after reference for essentially all solo piano music of significance. Outside professional private instruction and a reliable piano technician, every serious piano student needs three tools on hand: a piano, piano music, and this guide. Hinson's reputation as both an effective and productive musicologist is firmly established in this work.
The book is structured into two primary sections. The main section, Part 1, is alphabetically categorized by composer. Each referenced work includes a list of available publications, their editors, and the composition's date if known. Hinson includes a brief yet vivid description of the style or character of a given piece and, in most cases, a comment or two on some of the technical requirements one can expect for preparatory purposes. The guide is also a reliable reference to books for further study of a given work. Both logic and common sense went into organizing the massive collection of data. The guide also proves sensibly formatted for sections of large volume by a single composer, such as the collections of Bach or Chopin, for example.
Part 2 is an impressive reference to published anthologies, subdivided into four categories. The first category, "General," lists publications of character pieces, impressionistic works, and any number of "Heinz 57" types. There is a "General: Contemporary" section for twentieth century collections. In addition to Bartók, Prokofieff, and others from the earlier years of the century, one can also find reference to works by Boulez, Kohlenz and Harbison, to name a few. The third category, coined "Tombeaux, Hommages," is a brief list of collections of works composed in honor of another composer. The fourth category, the largest of the four, is a comprehensive reference to piano collections by nationality. It is subdivided alphabetically.
The book includes an appendix of historical recital programs by Rubinstein, Busoni and Gabrilowitsch. There is also an impressive group of indexes for referencing under different category types.
The entire collection of works are broadly lumped into four technical grades. The labels are "Easy," "Intermediate (Int.)," "Moderately Difficult (M-D)," and "Difficult (D)." It may help the amateur, when focusing on technical problems, to limit the comparisons to other works of the same genre or by the same composer, rather than cross-comparing any two works that happen to have the same grade.
For example, Franz Liszt's "Transcendental Etudes" is marked "D" for difficult; likewise György Ligeti's "Etudes for Piano" is graded "D." Since the primary technical demands for these two works are as different from each other as the works themselves, the grade is really little more than a signal that both works will require extensive work and patience beyond most anything marked M-D. Naturally, the serious piano student will pursue further research for works of this magnitude anyway, but Hinson's commentary often provides key information for what lies ahead. In Liszt's etude collection, for instance, the player will confront "double-note tremolos," and a "melody with rapid tremolo accompaniment in the same hand." For Ligeti's set, the performer faces "polyrhythmic, simultaneous progressive layers of tempo" and a command in dynamics ranging between ffffffff and pppppppp. Hinson's carefully worded descriptions often prove crucial in matters such as this. It pays to note them.
This massive project is both focused and thorough. Hinson has delivered a beneficial service for the serious piano explorer. Even casual browsing proves enlightening.
One request for the next edition: since the "Tombeaux, Hommages" category is so small, and only a few homages happen to be in collections, perhaps a comprehensive list of all published piano homages would make a worthy addition. Sincere thanks from this aging amateur pianist and music-lover goes to Mr. Hinson, the publisher, and to all teachers and professionals involved in the making of this excellent handbook.

"New" edition, but mostly unchanged
By pianomac
The Third Edition of "Hinson" (Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire) has perhaps 120 new entries, but is otherwise unchanged. I looked for the entry for Leo Ornstein as an example, and indeed his date of death was not included. (He was born, probably, in 1892). I assume that, similarly, there was little revision done on previous entries.

Hinson's opinions are usually authoritative, if occasionally annoying. For pianists interested in expanding their repertory, this is an essential resource. One problem is that the coverage is focussed on available published editions. Today a huge range of formerly out-of-print piano music is available for free download from [...] This site did not exist when previous editions came out. Publishers, and Amazon, may not approve, but a guide intended to be comprehensive should cover this resource.

From the Back Cover
Leopold Auer (1845–1930) belonged to that select company of violin virtuosos who not only established the level of artistic excellence for the nineteenth century, but also trained many of the violinists who surpassed that level in the twentieth. Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz, and Efrem Zimbalist (Sr.) were among Auer's students. Himself a pupil of the great Joseph Joachim, Auer will always be regarded as one of the most important violin pedagogues in history.
This exemplary collection of principles and guidelines was set down by the master after a lifetime of playing and teaching. Auer taught by example, and he directs violin teachers to inculcate the intricacies of execution by means of the violin itself, not simply by verbal instruction. He then devotes the rest of his advice to the violin pupil: how to hold the violin and bow, how to practice, and how to approach such matters of technique as tone production, vibrato, bowing methods including the legato, left-handed technique, double stops, trills, pizzicato, harmonics, and phrasing. In the concluding chapters Auer takes up the more general topics of style, stage fright, changes in the violin repertory, and, of great historical interest, his practical repertory hints―what he gave his own students to play. Many of the book's chapters are illuminated by biographical details and anecdotes about famous musicians whom Auer knew: Davidov, Wieniawski, Seidel, Wilhemj, Sarasate, and von Bulow.
Receiving poor direction at an early age is disastrous for a violinist. As Auer says, "There is no instrument whose absolute mastery at a later period presupposes such meticulous care and exactitude in the initial stages of study as does the violin." With this book every beginning violin student will have the benefit of the finest guidance.

Witty, opinionated, and insightful
By Clare Chu
This little gem of a book reads like a tip book, expose, soapbox, gossip column and memoir. Auer is witty and funny, sometimes he had me laughing in stitches. For example, his description of chronic vibrato, "this physical evil generally may be traced to a group of sick or ailing nerves, hitherto undiscovered." Another diatribe on the lack of standards for violin teachers: "Many are indeed desirous of doing their best, but alas, having themselves been ill-taught, they spread the poison of their own ignorance broadcast, a plague which carries off many hapless innocents, victims of their pernicious teaching methods."
Auer was in the position to learn from, observe, and teach some of the best violinists of the last two centuries. He studied with Jacob Dont in Vienna and Joachim in Hanover, was a contemporary of Davidov, Wieniawski, Seidel, Wilhelmj, Sarasate, von Bulow, and taught Elman, Zimbalist, and Jascha Heifetz. Who would have known that Joachim had such stage fright, or that Mischa Elman almost died of coal-gas fumes the night before his debut?
The book has nice tips on fingering, bowing and tone production. He also devotes a chapter to nuance, the soul of interpretation and phrasing and another chapter to Style, where he wisely suggests that each generation interprets the music to suit the style of that era. No one really knows how Bach played baroque music, and no one can claim to be authentic to a time period that has long since passed away. "The musical spirit of Bach transcends all narrow limitations of period, and the artist of today who truly enters into this spirit will play Bach as he should be played, and will play Bach better because he will play him in the interpretative spirit of our own generation, not that of 1720." He deplores the blind upholders of "tradition" and insists that the violinist must form his own style, not just copy that of another.
On the famous shoulder-rest controversy, Auer comes down strictly on the "no-shoulder-rest" school claiming that it makes the player lose a third of the whole body of tone. One look at a picture of Auer playing the violin and you can see why his physique is suited to no-shoulder-rest. He has no neck, a protruding chin, and a squat frame upon which he can rest the violin on his chest, with relatively short arms, so he can hold the instrument directly in front of him. He also insists that you hold the violin as high as possible, especially when playing on the G string. You can see the results with Jascha Heifetz, who holds his violin up high and uses no shoulder rest. Of course, men of those days had padded shoulders on their suits and tuxedos, so the violin fit right up there.
This book is of interest in learning about violin pedagogy as taught in the Russian conservatories at the turn of the last century. And has valuable tips and technical aids. However, it does not substitute for a good teacher. And Auer would wholeheartedly agree, especially for beginners: "There is no instrument whose absolute mastery at a later period presupposes such meticulous care and exactitude in the initial stages of study as does the violin."

Excellent resource for teachers and more advanced student
By taihiong
I find this book invaluable as a resource for serious violin students and teachers. Leopold Auer elaborates a lot of insights and perspectives on better techniques to play the violin. This book is not merely about performing certain violin techniques, but also about the logic behind better ways of executing them.
I would agree, however, that this book is not for beginner level violin students. Auer does say that correct foundation should be built since the early stage, but many of the explanations are beyond the reach of those beginner who can't even produce the techniques way too difficult for their stage; say, vibrato, double-stops, spiccato, etc. However, this is a good resource for violin teachers to lay correct foundation step by step following the progress of their students. Also, this is a good book for more advanced students as a comparative reference on how well they have understood the techniques, at least as another perspective.
Overall, this book is highly recommended for serious students and teachers of violin.

Over my head
By A Customer
Whereas I'm sure there is no doubting Mr. Auer's ability in playing the violin, as a beginner, I found alot of what he had to say here, irrelevant for my needs. Perhaps I thought that by the word 'teach' in the title, that it would assist, but in fact, it didn't at all. If anything, it made me wonder why I was attempting to start this instrument so late in life!

The Association of Small Bombs: A Novel, by Karan Mahajan

Longlisted for the National Book Award & the FT/Oppenheimer Emerging Voices Award
A New York Times Editors’ Choice
Named a Best Book of 2016 by: Esquire, Time magazine, Vulture.com

“Wonderful. . . . Smart, devastating, unpredictable, and enviably adept in its handling of tragedy and its fallout. If you enjoy novels that happily disrupt traditional narratives—about grief, death, violence, politics—I suggest you go out and buy this one. Post haste.” —Fiona Maazel, The New York Times Book Review

“Brilliant. . . . Mr. Mahajan’s writing is acrid and bracing, tightly packed with dissonant imagery. . . . The Association of Small Bombs is not the first novel about the aftermath of a terrorist attack, but it is the finest I’ve read at capturing the seduction and force of the murderous, annihilating illogic that increasingly consumes the globe.” —Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal

“[Mahajan’s] eagerness to go at the bomb from every angle suggests a voracious approach to fiction-making, a daring imaginative promiscuity that moves beyond the scope of his first, very good novel, Family Planning.” —The New Yorker

“[A] beautifully written novel. . . . Ambitious. . . . Carries us deep into the human side of a tragedy.” —The Washington Post

For readers of Mohsin Hamid, Dave Eggers, Arundhati Roy, and Teju Cole, The Association of Small Bombs is an expansive and deeply humane novel that is at once groundbreaking in its empathy, dazzling in its acuity, and ambitious in scope

When brothers Tushar and Nakul Khurana, two Delhi schoolboys, pick up their family’s television set at a repair shop with their friend Mansoor Ahmed one day in 1996, disaster strikes without warning. A bomb—one of the many “small” bombs that go off seemingly unheralded across the world—detonates in the Delhi marketplace, instantly claiming the lives of the Khurana boys, to the devastation of their parents. Mansoor survives, bearing the physical and psychological effects of the bomb. After a brief stint at university in America, Mansoor returns to Delhi, where his life becomes entangled with the mysterious and charismatic Ayub, a fearless young activist whose own allegiances and beliefs are more malleable than Mansoor could imagine. Woven among the story of the Khuranas and the Ahmeds is the gripping tale of Shockie, a Kashmiri bomb maker who has forsaken his own life for the independence of his homeland.

Karan Mahajan writes brilliantly about the effects of terrorism on victims and perpetrators, proving himself to be one of the most provocative and dynamic novelists of his generation.

—Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal

“[Mahajan's] eagerness to go at the bomb from every angle suggests a voracious approach to fiction-making, a daring imaginative promiscuity that moves beyond the scope of his first, very good novel, Family Planning. . . . Tragedy deepens Mahajan’s range. In the first few pages of his new novel, he renders the spectacle of the bombing with a languid, balletic beauty, pitting the unhurried composure of his prose against the violence of the events it describes. . . . Mahajan has a cinematic attunement to the spectacle of disaster, and he often focuses on the minor rather than the grandiose, to eerie effect.”
—Alexandra Schwartz, The New Yorker

“A deeply moving exploration of terrorism that destroys the tropes of the subcontinental novel. . . . In flitting between the perspectives of terrorists and victims, parents and children, Hindus and Muslims, Mahajan has committed to a radical and extended act of empathy. . . . Where other authors concede the clash between the West’s physicality and the East’s spiritualism, Mahajan deftly shows how fundamentally reliant each is on the other, and, consequently, how silly the binary truly is.”
—Sharan Shetty, The Slate Book Review

“A singularly intelligent novel.”
—Parul Sehgal, The New York Times Book Review

“[A] beautifully written novel. . . . Ambitious. . . . Carries us deep into the human side of a tragedy. . . .”
—The Washington Post

“When two brothers are killed in an explosion in Delhi, it forever changes the lives of the boy who was with them, the parents who mourn them and the man who made the bomb.”
—Time magazine, A Best Book of 2016 So Far

“A complex meditation on violence, fundamentalism and grief. . . . A superb novel. . . . A careful, discriminate and moral work of art.”
—Luke Brown, The Financial Times

“Even when handling the darkest material or picking through confounding emotional complexities, Mahajan maintains a light touch and a clarity of vision. . . . He is particularly adept at capturing the quicksilver shifts of mood that accompany states of high emotion. . . . Mahajan shows immense perspicacity in his handling of Deepa, and of the other women in the novel. . . . Mahajan’s novel is as much a chronicle of the cascading effects of the opening of India’s economy and the global response to 9/11 as it is about a bomb explosion in a down-at-heel neighborhood market. . . . In the end the Lajpat Nagar bomb, like the plot of a novel, is at the beck and call of the writer who conjured it. Except that instead of dooming his characters all at once, Mahajan picks them off with abrupt indifference, like a lone shooter, one by one.”
—Deborah Baker, London Review of Books

“The pitfalls of the terror novel are crudity, fetishization of the terrorist’s mind, and over-attention to the obvious, but Mahajan’s book suffers from none of these. He’s proved that the job can be done with subtlety and an eye for the fine grains of daily life, and not without comedy or irony.”
—Christian Lorentzen, Vulture.com's “Best Books of 2016 (So Far)”

“Just like its beautifully designed cover, The Association of Small Bombs is simple in premise, but it explodes in bursts of brilliant color. Karan Mahajan’s masterful novel explores the aftermath of a small bomb detonation in the '90s in Delhi, and the many people whose lives it alters—from the families of victims to the bombers themselves. With great empathy and no lack of humor, Mahajan shows the multitudinous sides to the kind of story that we usually read a line or two about in a newspaper, or hear short mention of on television.”
—Maris Kreizman, Esquire’s Best Books of 2016

“A tour de force of psychological probing and empathy.”
—The Austin-American Statesman

“Darkly incisive . . . timely. . . . In Mahajan’s riveting and intricate story, the aftershocks of small bombs are as inescapable as their explosions.”
—Vice

“Karan Mahajan’s The Association of Small Bombs urgently depicts the toll of terrorism on victims and perpetrators.”
—Vanity Fair

“Writing as brave as you will find it. . . . Cumulative, unnerving, and surprising.”
—Jonathan Sturgeon, Flavorwire

“Mahajan's small touches—especially his insight into how people react to trauma and loss—are succinct and persuasive. . . . Mahajan has a lot on his mind in The Association of Small Bombs. . . . He's a voice well worth heeding.”
—Michael Upchurch, The Chicago Tribune

“The architecture of the novel is brilliant in its literary exploration of the aftermath of small bombs. . . . Propulsive. . . . The dark humor keeps the novel lively rather than overdetermined. . . . Powerful, unsettling. . . . The Association of Small Bombs is a thing of loveliness—its structure and concept are a marvel.”
—The Los Angeles Review of Books

“A wise, searing, sculptural approach to the roots and aftermaths of terrorism and radicalization. . . . Mahajan has mastered a nonpareil 360-degree portrait of one of the most disturbing, least understood malaises of our time.”
—The Millions

“Nothing short of a tour de force. . . . Line for line, it is a wry and also a wrenching book, at once a lesson in Indian political culture and a lesson in centripetal force—for however far these characters travel psychologically, they are always tethered to the bomb.”
—Katherine Hill, The Philadelphia Inquirer

“A psychologically intimate and stylistically compelling examination of the ripple effects of small acts of terrorism. . . . In a post-9/11 world, this novel should be considered a must-read.”
—The Huffington Post

“A deeply compassionate exploration of the effects terrorism has on both the victims and the perpetrators. . . . Dark, devastating, and sharply wise, The Association of Small Bombs is a tale of loss, grief, guilt, and redemption.”
—Buzzfeed, Most Exciting Books Coming in 2016

“A sweeping, gripping narrative composed of multiple perspectives. . . . Mahajan astounds with his devastating study of violence. Not every writer can tap into the mindset of a bomber – Joseph Conrad triumphed in The Secret Agent whereas John Updike failed in Terrorist – but Mahajan pulls it off with chilling results.”
—Malcolm Forbes, The National

“Rarely have I read a novel more timely. . . . The all-encompassing blanket of tragedy brought on by a ‘small bomb’ makes this novel personal and poignant.”
—The Missourian

“A fast-paced examination of a minor terrorist act in mid-nineties New Delhi, told in a cinematic (better yet: televisionary) third person.”
—The Oxford American

“Beautiful and evocative . . . a compelling story about extremism and its effects.”
—BookPage

“This one will hit you hard. . . . Powerful, breathtaking, and unforgettable, this book pulls out dynamic insight on the effects of terrorism on its victims.”
—Bustle

“Besides having one of the most instantly memorable titles for a novel in recent memory, Karan Mahajan’s new novel explores the life of a young man in the aftermath of a horrific event that takes the life of two of his friends. With a story that crosses continents and addresses questions of nationalism, terrorism, and the effects of violence, this novel seems ready to engage with some of our era’s looming issues.”
—Vol. 1 Brooklyn, “March 2016 Books Preview”

“Mahajan’s talent is in conveying the sense that the world is gray, not black-and-white, and he accomplishes this by weaving together the evolving motives and passions of his characters so intricately that in the end we see each as culpable, and human. In his searing story, lives (and life itself) are subjected to close inspection and at times discombobulation.”
—Publishers Weekly

“In the virtuosic opening of Mahajan’s timely second novel, he writes, ‘a good bombing begins everywhere at once.’ This setup works well for the broad array of story lines connected to a 1996 detonation of a small but potent bomb in a humble Delhi marketplace. . . . The anchoring characters are Mansoor and Shockie, a Kashmiri bomb maker who refers to his deadly art as ‘making chocolate,’ even as he worries about his victims and his ill mother. Mahajan’s terrorists and social activists are never content to settle into one venue or mindset.”
—Booklist

“[Mahajan is] strong at exploring the very long shockwaves of small-scale violence.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“With The Association of Small Bombs . . . [Mahajan] may well have moved into the upper reaches of contemporary fiction.”
—Flavorwire, Most Anticipated Books of 2016

“In this fine novel, Karan Mahajan has achieved a brilliant and distinctive success. The sources, and unbearable, unending, consequences of a terrorist atrocity constitute a subject extremely difficult to capture in a work of serious literature. But with his intelligence, humanity, and art, Mahajan has given us a deep portrait of life in a kind of darkness.”
—Norman Rush, National Book Award-winning author of Mating and Mortals

“Karan Mahajan is a writer with great command and acute and original insights. He offers what few can: a stereoscopic view of reality in dark, contemporary times.”
—Rachel Kushner, author of the National Book Award Finalist The Flamethrowers

“Like a Russian novel set in India, Karan Mahajan’s Association of Small Bombs has the sweep, wisdom and sensibility of the old masters. Here the humor of Bulgakov and the heart of Pasternak deliver an exploded-view of a small bomb that goes off in a minor market in a corner of South Delhi. Like shrapnel, themes of suffering, dislocation and redemption radiate from the blast, and none will be spared Mahajan’s piercing gaze. Urgent and masterful, this novel shows us how bystander, bomber, victim, and survivor will forever share a patch of scorched ground.”
—Adam Johnson, author of the National Book Award winner Fortune Smiles and the Pulitzer Prize winner The Orphan Master’s Son

“The Association of Small Bombs is a wondrous, devastating novel—packed with small wonders of beauty and heartbreak that are impossible to resist.”
—Dinaw Mengestu, MacArthur “Genius” grantee and author of All Our Names

“The Association of Small Bombs is a brilliant examination of aftermath, how life is built of consequences, both imagined and unimagined, the tight web of human life and human sympathy. Karan Mahajan knows everyone, on every side of a detonation: the lost, the grieving, the innocent, the guilty, the damaged. It’s hilarious and also devastating. Karan Mahajan is a virtuoso writer, and this is a wonderful book.”
—Elizabeth McCracken, Story Prize-winning author of Thunderstruck & Other Stories

“A gripping, timely, and moving novel by a writer of enormous talent.”
—Geoff Dyer, National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author of Otherwise Known as the Human Condition

“Packed with insight into the minds of a diverse cast of characters, The Association of Small Bombs is often breathtaking in its wisdom and maturity. With one sharp observation after another, Mahajan renders a picture of religious and political tension in Delhi that is as unforgettable as it is heartbreaking.”
—Adelle Waldman, author of The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.

“Karan Mahajan’s thoughtful, touching and perfectly pitched account of two marketplace bombings and the casual havoc they cause in a handful of Delhi families is almost subversive in its even-handedness and its charity. For all its unflinching—and unnerving—fatalism, The Association of Small Bombs is an unusually wise, tender, and generous novel.”
—Jim Crace, author of the Booker Prize finalist Harvest

“The Association of Small Bombs is an utterly brilliant book. Rarely does one encounter a work as masterful in the precision of its writing or as penetrating in the insights it provides. Karan Mahajan is a writer to be admired.”
—Kevin Powers, author of the National Book Award Finalist The Yellow Birds

“Karan Mahajan is daring comfortable readers to make an uncomfortable connection: between the bomb that goes off on the first page of his book, and the way the pages that follow seem to scatter, in bright-hot shards of heartbreaking story. The Association of Small Bombs, which tracks the aftermath of a blast in Delhi in 1996, is a work of disabused intelligence, and staggering compassion—for the victims, and even for the terrorists, all of whom are rendered whole, even if they’re in pieces. Its political subtlety is laudable for how relentlessly it’s paced, and the grace of its prose acts like a balm to its trauma. Mahajan’s sense of fiction as the history behind history puts him in league with Joseph Conrad, and like Conrad he succeeds brilliantly at writing past Empire, by relating the newest of news-cycles to the oldest of tale-cycles.”
—Joshua Cohen, author of Book of Numbers

Praise for Family Planning

“Profound . . . Mahajan is only 24 years old, but he has already developed an irresistible voice with a rich sense of humor fueled by sorrow.”
—Ron Charles, The Washington Post Book World

“The truest portrait of modern New Delhi I’ve read.”
—Suketu Mehta, author of Maximum City

“Family Planning is one of the best and funniest first novels I’ve read in years.”
—Jay McInerney, The Daily Beast

“Brave, breakneck, and amusing . . . A fearless cultural domestic tour . . . Irreverent, fresh, and sometimes, given its author’s youth, preternaturally wise . . . Almost every page bears a passage worth quoting.”
—The San Francisco Chronicle

“Mahajan packs this hyperbolic blast of a novel with scathing reflections . . . . The rhythms of [New Delhi’s] English, the tangle of its bureaucracies, the sights, sounds and smells of its streets—all spring to hectic life.”
—Michael Upchurch, The Seattle Times

“Highly entertaining . . . The level of concision, insight, and humor on display in Family Planning is rare from any writer, but particularly one so young.”
—Maud Newton, NPR Books We Like

“[A book] I’d love to ‘gift’ . . . is the coming-of-age comedy Family Planning, by the 24-year-old wunderkind Karan Mahajan. . . . I love the way Mahajan sees family life.”
—Liesl Schillinger, The Huffington Post

“Karan Mahajan combines take-no-prisoners satire with haunting insights into the human condition.”
—Manil Suri, author of The Death of Vishnu

One of the very best books I've read in years
By ARi
the association of small bombs is a moving and absorbing story. It follows several characters whose lives are touched by a terrorist bomb blast in a small Delhi market. Reading Karan Mahajan's masterful, unsentimental and deeply artful novel, I felt that for the first time in my life I understood what goes on in the mind of a person who might plant such a bomb. I was riveted, fascinated, completely engrossed in the lives of Mansoor, Ayub, Vikas, Deepa, Shockie, Malik -- in Mahajan's unsparing yet humane gaze they began to live fully and richly in my mind, in the way the characters of the best books do. In fact, this was one of the very best books I've read in years. I cannot recommend it enough.

Group portrait with bomber
By Amazon Customer
The novel portrayed the consequences of a terrorist act, and even the progress of a character's radicalization, in insightful terms. The author's objectivity is admirable.
However, the introduction of a major character well into the novel shifted the focus of the work as a whole and lessened my overall satisfaction with it.

Current and relevant to our nation at this time although it takes place in India in the '90's
By Thomas Brand
I liked the descriptive view of Indian youth culture at the time. Felt it was so close to US

Review

“... enthält alle Elemente, die das Buch international zum Bestseller gemacht haben. Es ist didaktisch durchdacht, reich illustriert, lernfreundlich geschrieben und hochaktuell ...” (in: Laborpraxis, Heft 1-2, 2016)

John Hayward in Chemistry World

Andrew Boa in The Times Higher Education

Prof. Dr. Rolf Breinbauer, TU Graz

Prof. Dr. Uta Breuer, Fachhochschule Nordhausen

Ausgezeichnetes Standardwerk.

Dipl.-Ing. Franz Maier, HTL Ried

Sehr empfehlenswert!

Tim Fotschki, Fritz-Henßler-Berufskolleg, Dortmund

Dr. Ulf Ritgen, Hochschule Bonn, Rhein, Sieg
