Reviewing the book, not the philosophy

I am not qualified to weigh in on the merits of Epicurus' school of philosophy. As Westerners, we've decided over that two thousand years that his thoughts on death and pleasure and pain are profound and provocative.

What's important to the average reader though is whether this is the book you should pick up to learn about him. The short answer is yes, the longer one is that it is not enough.

The book has a fairly weak introduction that doesn't provide much context. The author would have been well-served to have included the entirety of Laertius' essay on Epicurus to which he dedicated a large portion to in his biography of great philosophers.

Otherwise, the translation is good and the organization is helpful. The book is structured like a college reader - no frills, thin paper and a drab cover. It has all of Epicurus' fragments, letters and writings. Unfortunately many of the best ones are cut off or lost so we have to make due with what is left.

A first time reader or student looking to introduce themselves to Epicurus could do worse than starting here. I often refer back to my copy.

Fantastic book. Love how it comes wrapped up in the packaging and stays in new condition. Never knew how deep the definition of documentation was. Opens the mind about how documentary has evolved over the years. I've come to a higher respect for artwork and the different kinds. Great read! Do recommend.

Good book for teachers

This book provides seven ways to help you be a better teacher. The book is geared toward teaching the word of God, but could be applied to any subject.

The seven methods are summarized below:

1. Teachers never stop learning.
2. People learn differently - so teach them differently.
3. The most effective learning comes from involvement.
4. To communicate your subject you must know it well, believe it, and live it.
5. Teaching is from the heart, meaning your whole self.
6. Effective teaching is motivating.
7. Preparation of both teacher and student makes for the best learning experience.

The author dedicates one chapter each to the above mentioned topics. There is also an introductory chapter at the beginning and summary chapter at the end. At the end of each chapter there are some reflection type questions to ponder.

Overall, this is a good book and a worthwhile read if you are interested in improving your teaching.

This one is a must read from anyone. Prof Hendricks takes his usual down-to-earth style, and cram packs this book full of useful information. Whether you teach Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, or just want to be a more effective witness of the gospel, this book is for you.

About the Author

One of the most prominent music journalists of the twentieth century, Timothy White wrote extensively on Marley, reggae, and Caribbean music and culture for Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and other leading publications. His close contact with Marley and his family and inner circle of friends led to White being granted access to private papers, photographs, and memorabilia. White died in 2002.

good but not great

I think that the background about Jamaican history provided in this book is interesting for those who have a wider interest in reggae and Jamaican culture but it does interrupt the flow of the biography about Bob. The author really could have edited down the amount of background info to good effect.

I am quite happy with the amount of info provided about Bob's childhood and adolescence. Very rewarding for painting a portrait of the artist. The only thing that was lacking was more color about the ten most interesting years of Bob's life when he was recording for Island! There are less than a hundred pages devoted to this period of Bob's life but more than a hundred devoted to the irrelevant BS that happened after he died. The most important time of his life was certainly glossed over.

That being said I still enjoyed the book (and this was my second time reading it) but if I ever re-read this book, I will remember to stop reading after the time when he died.

Extremely thorough

White wrote a very thorough book about Jamaica and Jamaican music. The Jamaica that Bob Marley grew up in. He provides a detailed account of the Jamaican culture before and during Bob Marley's rise to success. White also chronicles the unfortunate hangers-on that accumulated with Bob's success and blemished his later years. The songs i have been listening to by Bob Marley for the last 20 years now have new meaning after reading this book. Initially, I thought a song was about this or that, but with some background into Marley's tribulations at the time the song was written, that particular song has a whole new meaning. For a true Bob Marley fanatic such as myself, read this book if you want to know him from his boyhood to a man as well as the musician that broke barriers that were firmly positioned.

Bob Marley's Life

This book is more than just a biography of the late Bob Marley. It has a lot to offer the reader.

Jamaican history and the history of the Rastafarian religion are covered in detail. It's also a ghost story, where as the author tells us how the believe in the supernatural, influences everyday Jamaican life.

Marley, of course is the central character in the narrative. The other characters are highly interesting also. Bob's mother and father (the word father is used loosely) are central characters of the story, as are the member of the Wailers and his faithful wife, Rita

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Marley, the Caribbean or Reggae music.

About the Author

John C. Bean is an emeritus professor of English at Seattle University, where he held the title of “Consulting Professor of Writing and Assessment.”  He has an undergraduate degree from Stanford (1965) and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington (1972).  He is the author of Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom, 2nd edition (Jossey-Bass, 2011).  He is also the co-author of three widely-used composition textbooks–Writing Arguments, The Allyn and Bacon Guide to Writing, and Reading Rhetorically.  He has published numerous articles and book chapters on writing in the disciplines as well as on literary subjects.   His current research interests focus on pedagogical strategies for teaching undergraduate research including quantitative literacy, disciplinary methods of inquiry and argument, and the problem of “transfer of learning” as students move through and across a curriculum.  He has delivered lectures and conducted workshops on writing-across-the-curriculum throughout the United States and Canada as well as for universities in Germany, Bangladesh, and Ghana.  In 2010 his article “Messy Problems and Lay Audiences:  Teaching Critical Thinking within the Finance Curriculum” (co-authored with colleagues from finance and economics) won the 2009 McGraw-Hill — Magna Publications Award for the year’s best “scholarly work on teaching and learning.”

Almost like having a partner leave me notes

This book had a lot of writing already done in it, as well as highlighting of course. The cover had a bit of wear and tear but nothing too major. No water damage or anything of the sort. However, for the class I'm taking it doesn't much matter what's already written in, it actually gives me a bit of an upper hand. Almost like having a partner leave me notes. The only problem is that it's going to hard to sell again later because it will be ever MORE USED. If you're on financial aid and you'd like to sell the books later for extra summer cash, then I wouldn't suggest buying anything THIS used, because it will be horrid condition once you're done with it. If you're just looking for a cheap and easy way to get your book then go for this.

The book was a little worn, and it had a big water stain on it. I don't really care. It did the job and all pages were readable. I just don't want to get into trouble for damage to a book that I didn't cause.

A Good Collectors Item

A good little collectors item if you're into the series. As far as the subject matter goes it leaves a bit (or a lot depending on how forgiving you're feeling) to be desired. I honestly wish they would have stuck with one artist to do the whole thing because it ends up being fairly (wildly) inconsistent stylistically, and with an IP as beautiful as Mirror's Edge, I feel that extra effort should have been exercised. It is in fact the six previously released comics bundled into a nice, easily readable volume. Understandably it is nice to see them include such a pool of talent, but ultimately I feel that it falls short of achieving what it should have as a supplementary work. Aside from that though, S&H for the product for me was as per the usual amazon quality, nothing dented or scratched, arrived in supreme condition.

My 1st graphic novel

I wanted to buy anything to do with the new Mirror's Edge. Within my budget. This was a nice purchase. I can't really critique the art because it's my 1st graphic novel, but I did really enjoy it. It blended with the art of ME:C. The story was predictable, but seeing slivers of non Runner citizens' lives was a nice touch.
