From School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—Elinor is a perfectionist. She loves school and takes her assignments very seriously. For Poetry Month, Mr. Tiffin teaches his class about different kinds of poetry, similes, and metaphors. Anticipating an upcoming author visit by a real poet, students are asked to write a poem and put it in their pocket. Elinor plans to wear her jeans with many pockets so she can have one in every pocket, but her obsession with perfection impedes her creativity. On the day of the visit, the child has not created anything that she considers good enough to share. When the guest asks her to read her poem, Elinor reveals that she "has a poem in the pocket of her mind." When she recites it, her words flow beautifully. This is a great book to share during National Poetry Month. Brief explanations are given for the more common poetry forms and the idea of a "Poem in Your Pocket Day" is inspiring. Pair this book with the works of Shel Silverstein, Paul B. Janeczko, Jack Prelutsky, Douglas Florian, or Robert Louis Stevenson, among others, to make a persuasive unit on the delights of the genre. Colorful illustrations of a busy classroom filled with enthusiastic students and a determined child keep the subject light and humorous. This title shines a light on a subject worthy of discussion.—Mary Hazelton, formerly at Warren & Waldoboro Elementary Schools, ME

Fun introduction to poetry
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: When Elinor hears that poet Emily Crane is coming to their school, she decides to write the perfect poem. Through the month of April, her class studies and writes all types of poems. Try as she might, Elinor, can’t get hers to be perfect. When the big day comes to greet Emily Crane, Elinor is the only one in the class with an empty pocket. One by one her classmates get on stage and share their poems. When it’s Elinor’s turn, she tells Ms. Crane that she tried but couldn’t write the perfect poem. “No poem is perfect,” the poet tells her. “Tell me what you’ve been thinking about.” And Elinor closes her eyes, thinks of all the poetry she’s been studying, and creates a poem.

What I liked: This a great introduction to poetry, covering similes, metaphors, haiku, concrete poems, acrostics, and funny rhymes. The kids are likeable and real. We’ve all known kids (and adults) like Elinor, and she doesn’t come across as the snobby know-it-all that she could have. The last two pages let Elinor give kids some facts about poetry and her teacher Mr. Tiffin share some pointers for teachers. I discovered that the other two books in this series (Mr. Tiffin’s Classroom) teach about math and apples.

What I didn’t like: All the pressure poor Elinor put on herself to perform.

Fun introduction to poetry and the truth that creative writing doesn't have to be "perfect"
By Teacher Mom
What a fun way to learn about poetry and the writing process. The story follows a class through a variety of poetry-writing activities and gave me a few ideas of my own to do at home. I love that the author introduces similes, metaphors, haiku and acrostics in a picture book. This is the way to learn - fun! The great American poet who visits the school is Emmy Crane, and she has dark skin. I'm excited to see diverse women role models featured in children's books.

My daughter's favorite character is Elinor. ("She's a little bossy.") She's also a perfectionist, and her teacher Mr. Tiffin reminds her that "Poetry is a messy business." Ms. Crane encourages Elinor and lets her know that "No poem is perfect," and that "words from the heart are where poetry begins."

My daughter was inspired to want to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day at her school this year. I love books that inspire children to take the idea and make it their own.

Fun with Mr. Tiffin and his class
By Edward J. Sherbahn
I enjoy sharing the many books by Margaret McNamara about Mr. Tiffin's classroom with my own students. I started with the counting pumpkin seeds book and I look forward to sharing this one with my class this month for National Poetry month and Poem in Your Pocket day at the end of April. These are well written and fun to share with kids.
