Dragons!
By S. Melvin
Need I saw more? Well, this is a review, so I probably should.

Realms of the Dragons is a Forgotten Realms based anthology, written by a fairly good group of FR authors. Some of the authors are legends in FR, while some were fairly new to this genre when they wrote for this anthology (and some have faded away as well). But the greats always bring something special to any of their works - even the short stories contained in this book.

So yes, this is an anthology - a collection of short stories all centered around a single theme. In this case - Dragons! Forgotten Realms history is rife with dragon lore. Almost every imaginable color of dragon has a place in one Forgotten Realms book or another - whether those books pertain to stories or gaming modules to help players and game masters develop their plot. Dragonos are the ultimate creatures on the planet. Even the gods show respect for the wisdom and capabilty of this species. Good dragons, bad dragons, fun dragons, and angry dragons...and covered by this book.

None of the stories really develops too deeply (remember, short stories), but lets you feel what the author was trying to portray. Sure, some of the authors do a better job at this than others, but honestly - the book was a pleasure to read from beginning to end.

Overall, the noble dragon, regardless of color or alignment has won a place in the minds of most fantasy lovers. Even real worth mythology, whether Europeon, Asian, or American has some form of dragon lore. It is in our dreams to believe that such a creature could or did exist. Sometimes evil, sometimes good, sometimes with wing and other times just a flying scaled worm. But the dragon...the dragon will live on. This book is for you - the guy that likes dragon stories and wants to see some of the details flushed out a bit more. Enjoy Forgotten Realms? Find dragons fascinating? Then, this is the book for you.

Realms of the Dragons anthology
By Travis Eisenbrandt
Realms of the Dragons edited by Philip Athans- This anthology was released in October 2004 and was published by Wizards of the Coast, Inc. This anthology is based in the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons and Dragons. This anthology ties into Richard Lee Byers' The Year of Rogue Dragons trilogy. There are fourteen short stories written by Paul S. Kemp, Edward Bolme, Elaine Cunningham, Ed Greenwood, Jess Lebow, R. A. Salvatore, Richard Baker, Thomas M. Reid, Lisa Smedman, Voronica Whitney-Robinson, Keith Francis Strohm, Dave Gross, Don Bassingthwaite, and Richard Lee Byers. Realms of the Dragons deals with stories about dragons.

"Soulbound" by Paul S. Kemp
Kesson Rel is the first Chosen of Mask, who drank from the chalice that Mask forbade anyone from drinking. Labeled a heretic by the followers of Mask, he seeks revenge on his fellow priests. However, an oath prevents him from just killing the priests. But he has another idea, use a Shadow Dragon to do it. After a vision that Avnon the Seer has, he knows what he must do.
Overall: 3/5
Thoughts:
"Soulbound" is an okay story. For those who haven't read The Erevis Cale Trilogy or the Twilight War Trilogy you will be left in the dark. However, Kesson Rel is a very interesting character who makes you want to find out more about him. It's still an entertaining story, but it could leave a lot of new readers in the dark.

"First Flight" by Edward Bolme
Serreg is an archwizard of the floating city Delia sent to discover why the earth and creatures below the city are dying. After coming to the conclusion that its something magic related, Serreg goes out to put a stop to the spell and its casters. However, Serreg underestimates the beings and cries out for help, which is answered by a god. The god gives Serreg a dagger that gives its wielder an amazing power, but at a cost. But is it enough to save the archwizard from the creatures?
Overall: 3/5
Thoughts:
"First Flight" was a good story, but it really felt out-of-place in this anthology. I would have expected that a story in an anthology about dragons be primarily about dragons. Instead we have a story that is based more on magic and the arcane than on dragons. However, the story itself was very entertaining and did hold my interest. It still is a good read, but still feels very out-of-place.

"Gorlist's Dragon" by Elaine Cunningham
Young Gorlist doesn't want to be a wizard like his father. Instead, he wants to be a warrior, just like his mother. He wants to follow in her footsteps, become a renowned gladiator like her and be as respected and feared. But that doesn't work in the drow society, and it doesn't help that Gorlist loves his mother blindly. So when she sells him to the gladiator pit, he wins every battle, to prove he's worth it. That is, until trickery and deceit pit Gorlist against a dragon in a battle he must win.
Overall: 4/5
Thoughts:
"Gorlist's Dragon" was a really fun and exciting story. The only problem was that I wished that Gorlist's relationship with his mother was a little more fleshed out and not tossed out like it was. That was a big disappointed. However, this story is a good way to get introduced into drow culture and the way they think. Also, the story itself felt more like two stories fit into one. All in all, this was a very good character driven story.

"The Keeper of Secrets" by Ed Greenwood
Mirt the Moneylender is trying to collect a debt from Yelver, but discovers him murdered. Mirt then goes off to find the secrets the man kept, seeking the aid of a person calling herself the Keeper of Secrets. However he is unable to find anything out and as they leave, a fight occurs and the Keeper asks him for help in exchange for Yelver's secrets. What was Yelver hiding and who exactly is this Keeper?
Overall: 2/5
Thoughts:
"The Keeper of Secrets" had an interesting beginning, but soon became confusing and bothersome. The murder mystery beginning of the story was interesting, but there wasn't a resolution to it, as far as I could tell. After that was scrapped and forgotten everything became a mess. It was just plain confusing, due to it feeling like it lost it's way. It actually felt like there wasn't a point to any of this. I didn't learn anything new, nor did I really care after the turn of events. Also, the dialogue had an unnatural pacing to it and it came across as forced. I would skip this story unless you can understand what is happening.

"The Topaz Dragon" by Jess Lebow
Captain Clay and his crew of the Expatriate are out to find an egg that's worth a small fortune. The only problem is that the egg is that of a topaz dragon. However, as they reach the island the dragon comes to them and asks for aid in recovering her stolen egg. It appears as though someone else took it before they could have. Captain Clay agrees to recover it, but finds himself up against something he didn't expect.
Overall: 4/5
Thoughts:
"The Topaz Dragon" was a pretty good story. The ending fight didn't really feel right. It was too quick and it seemed way to easy for the topaz dragon. The story, while basic, was still exciting and fun. The action scenes were really thrilling and kept the story moving. Also, Captain Clay came off as a very interesting character. I don't know why but something about him just makes me want to read more about him. Overall, the story was very exciting and definitely worth the read.

"Wickless in the Nether" by R. A. Salvatore
Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle are hired out to recover a flute that their benefactor's rival is in possession of. However, things don't go according to plan and identities aren't what they appear to be.
Overall: 5/5
Thoughts:
"Wickless in the Nether" is a good story. It builds on the friendship between Jarlaxle and Entreri and you should probably read this before going into Salvatore's Promise of the Witch King, which is part of The Sellswords trilogy. Otherwise, the story was fun as well as a good read.

"Serpestrillvyth" by Richard Baker
A group of adventurers arrive in a small town asking for aid. The townsfolk tell the adventuring company that a dragon is plaguing the village and has already slayed one group of adventurers already. After hearing this, the group hires the guide that led the first group to the dragon and set off. Things don't go according to plan.
Overall: 4/5
Thoughts:
"Serpestrillvyth" was an entertaining story with bad prose. When reading the story, it came off as sudden and jerky, instead of smooth and tight. However, this story was very unique. It was dark, with no happy ending. It felt refreshing to get a story that ends like this one does. Also, the dragon was terrifying and felt like a dragon should feel like. Serpestrillvyth was a powerhouse and not an easy kill, something that authors seem to forget about dragons. Overall, this was a good story and probably one of the darker ones of this anthology.

"Waylaid" by Thomas M. Reid
A young woman, Lynaelle, is on her way to the city of Silverymoon in the dead of winter. However, she gets waylaid by a white dragon and taken to its lair. The dragon than demands that Lynaelle serve him by killing the thief who stole his treasure. But is the thief really a thief? It is an orc after all.
Overall: 4/5
Thoughts:
"Waylaid" was another good story, but with an extremely cheesy ending. The ending itself wasn't terrible, but it was just too convenient and silly to be taken seriously. However, the rest of the story was wonderful. Lynaelle was a great character who played her part perfectly. I actually cared about her well-being and hoped everything turned out fine. Also, you could feel the fear she felt. It was a very frightening experience for her and it was written so that the reader would feel the same. Overall, this story was well worth the read, even with the silly and cliché ending.

"Standard Delving Procedure" by Lisa Smedman
Two dwarves, an old delver named Durin and a new recruit named Frivaldi, are searching for a magical weapon called The Bane of Caeruleus. This weapon was forged to be able kill a blue dragon, and the knowledge of how to forge more of these weapons is what the duo are after. However, Frivaldi isn't following standard delving procedure and is getting the pair into trouble, but are they able to get out of it?
Overall: 5/5
Thoughts:
"Standard Delving Procedure" is a great story. It's clever and amusing and kept me entertained throughout. I really liked the use of acronyms for the 'rules of delving', they were just clever. The dwarves really worked well together. They were the usual foils to each other, but it worked to perfection. They brought a lot of amusement and humor to the story. All in all, this story was a great read and had some wonderful characters.

"An Icy Heart" by Voronica Whitney-Robinson
Chorael, a dragon turtle is about to lay her eggs. While creating her nest, she reflects on the rage that has afflicted dragonkind and what it's doing to her species. After laying her eggs, she returns to the icy waters of the lake only to discover a man drowning. She makes a last second decision and saves him, but somethings not quite right about the situation and she is too late to stop it.
Overall: 4/5
Thoughts:
"An Icy Heart" was a good story, albeit a slow one. The story felt very sluggish at times and I found myself not caring about what happens early on. However, that soon changed because the story was actually interesting and heartbreaking. What also interested me were the dragon turtles themselves, and I would like to know about these creatures. If you can get past the slow development, this story may just surprise you.

"Penitential Rites" by Keith Francis Strohm
Drakken Thaal, a half-dragon, finds himself losing to the urges of the rage. He is afraid that he killed a friend, a sub-prior in a temple of Ilmater, due to it. However, the rest of the members of the temple don't think he did and he is tasked to uncover the murder. What he finds both relieves and boils the rage inside him.
Overall: 4/5
Thoughts:
"Penitential Rites" was a very interesting story, however paced very slowly. The slow pacing didn't fit with the murder mystery plot. It wasn't as exciting and fast paced as other murder mysteries. However, the murder mystery itself was interesting. It was exciting to see the effect the mystery had on Drakken. Also, Drakken was a great character for that reason as well. It was interesting to see him try to fight off the mounting rage he was feeling. Overall, this story was good and definitely worth a read for another view of the dragon rage.

"How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth" by Dave Gross
Talbot Uskevren does not do commissions. As the majority shareholder for the Wide Realms playhouse, that should have some say. However, when an alluring woman comes to them with an offer to create a play, Talbot can't help but accept. She wants a play that can "break a miser's heart", but what Talbot crafts is something beyond that. That is, until the special guest the woman mentioned arrives to attend.
Overall: 5/5
Thoughts:
"How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth" is a fantastic story. It was interesting and engaging. It added just enough humor to keep it fresh and exciting. Also, it's next to see a new dimension to Talbot. Overall, read this story.

"Beer with a Fat Dragon" by Don Bassingthwaite
A caravan arrives at an oasis, much to the joy of the group. Tycho Arisaenn, a bard, eyes up the women and heads off for the oasis' tavern, which is little more than a filthy large tent. After winning the locals over with song, he makes a mistake in dishonoring the people's beliefs by using magic. However, that's not all he dishonors.
Overall: 4/5
Thoughts:
"Beer with a Fat Dragon" was an amusing and fun story to read. However, there were a few times in the story that I found my self confused for a moment. There were more than a few awkward sentences or outbursts that never really seemed to fit in the moment. Otherwise, everything else was great. Tycho was a very interesting character and I would like to read more about him. He's charisma just had me hooked from the start. I was also surprised by how humorous the story was. I found myself with a smile on my face more than once while reading. All in all, this story is definitely worth a read and hopefully you can understand some of the awkward scenes better than I could.

"The Prisoner of Hulberg" by Richard Lee Byers
Will and Pavel travel to Hulburg in hopes of discovering another clue to the rage. However, what they find isn't what they expected. Deciding to intervene, they find themselves in a dire situation that only luck could get them out.
Overall: 3/5
Thoughts:
"The Prisoner of Hulberg" didn't seem to really do much, other than have a pretty good fight scene. Will and Pavel didn't really have that much more development, other than solidifying their friendship. The action was really entertaining and did help hold my interest. It's worth a read if you want a more action heavy story.

OVERALL AVERAGED ANTHOLOGY: 4/5
Final Thoughts:
Realms of the Dragons is a very enjoyable anthology with not very many terrible or bad stories. Each story does do a competent job at capturing your interest in dragon culture of the Forgotten Realms. While there were a few stories that could've had better representation of dragons, they were still very enjoyable. All in all, this was a very pleasing and enjoyable anthology. Should you go pick this up? Yes, this is more than worth a purchase with a vast amount of great story and it can introduce you to some wonderful new authors.

A decent anthology
By Doc
Providing a selection of stories from a range of eras in the Forgotten Realms history and present, this anthology's stories all involve dragons in some fashion.

While his is usually the best among Forgotten Realms anthologies, Salvatore's "Wickless in the Nether" is not really anything to rave about. This is another Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle story, this time having them being manipulated by dragons. The story really does not go anywhere, though it might tie into the next novel involving them. This one just did not do it for me, though it was the reason I bought the book.

"Soulbound" gives us a story of a Shadow Dragon and its dealings with some clerics of Shadow. The ending was disappointing, though there might be a sequel at some point, or so I hope.

"First Flight" by Edward Bolme is a great read. This one has a wizard of Netheril investigating some mysterious happenings, and being caught up in some deific meddling.

Cunningham's "Gorlist's Dragon" was so-so, telling the tale of a drow in Ched Nasad. This is something of a coming-of-age tale, and was worth the read.

Greenwood's "Keeper of Secrets" was also a so-so read. This is a story set in Waterdeep, with some familiar characters. Mirt the Moneylender contacts a mysterious figure of rumor in his attempt to solve the murder of one of those in debt to him.

"The Topaz Dragon" by Lebow was a nice story. This one has a dragon trying to use those who would steal her egg to her own ends.

"Serpestrillvyth" by Richard Baker was a really nice story. While many others have nice touchy-feely resolutions, this one certainly does not. It deals with a band of adventurers in their mission to save a town from the depredations of an evil dragon.

"Waylaid" is a good read, brought to us by Thomas Reid. It has a half-elf snared by a white dragon and coerced into doing its bidding.

"Standard Delving Procedure" by Smedman started out very promising, though the ending was somewhat abrupt and only partially satisfying. I liked it overall though, with an older dwarf trying to mentor a younger impetuous one.

"An Icy Heart" provides a nice story about Dragon Turtles and their attempts to deal with the Rage, the malady that is making dragons go crazy.

"Penitential Rites" by Strohm is a murder mystery that was really not that tough to solve. I did not get much from this tale of a half-dragon trying to repent for his past misdeeds.

Dave Gross's "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth" is a truly great story. This one has a theater troupe writing and performing a play as a special commission. The characterization and plot development, as well as the details of the day-to-day theater life. This and Byers' story are the two best in the book.

"Beer with a Fat Dragon" is another so-so story. This one has characters from the Forgotten Realms' Far East dealing with a dragon legend from that region.

Richard Lee Byers' "The Prisoner of Hulburg" is another great story. Evil Zhents, archeological delvings, thieves, psionics, clerics, demons, and fighting, all good stuff. Definitely a page turner.

While most of the stories are so-so, the writing itself is generally good. The two stories by Byers and Gross alone make this collection worth picking up.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3–This tale's classic storytelling structure makes it a natural for storytime. Four days before Halloween, a pumpkin with a "wicked grin" and no other facial features appears in Mrs. McMurphy's hallway. It threatens her, "When my teeth are here, I'll eat you," but she refuses to be cowed and carries it outside. The pumpkin mysteriously reappears inside her house on each of the following days, first with a "crooked nose" to add to the grin, then "two pointy ears," then "two mean eyes." Each time, it repeats its warning and the woman responds by sending it farther and farther away. Finally, on Halloween, the pumpkin returns once more, complete with "large, sharp teeth," and declares that it's ready to eat her. Mrs. McMurphy calmly replies, "We'll have to see about that," and ends up making a pie and serving delicious slices to her trick-or-treaters. Walton uses lots of repetition that invites young listeners to chant along. Done in gouache and acrylics, the folkloric illustrations are dominated by orange tones and filled with wonderful details. This is sure to be a Halloween favorite.–Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY

A very good Halloween story for young children
By youbink
I like the little bit of suspense this book provides for the child without being overly scary. A pumpkin appears one day in Mrs. McMurphy's house , at that time the pumpkin only has a grin and no other facial features. The pumpkin tells her that when he gets his teeth , he is going to eat her. Mrs. McMurphy handles the situation beautifully, and calmly removes the pumpkin from her house .(I love when she boxes the pumpkin and sends it to the North Pole.)But the pumpkin keeps returning, and every time it does , it possesses a new facial feature. As the pumpkin continues to return the suspense builds. Finally the pumpkin returns with his teeth, and Mrs. McMurphy ends up making a pie out of the pumpkin and giving slices of it out to trick or treaters. Nicely illustrated, I love the emerging details on the pumpkin, a nice Halloween story for young children . Just enough suspense to make it a Halloween story without frightening the child too much. I like the way Mrs. McMurphy handles the pumpkin , I think it's good for children to see that you can handle things calmly.

I've read this over 100 times to my kids!
By Sherri
I have a 7 year old and a 16 month old and I am constantly looking for new books for them. This book has become so special to my girls that I had to order a second book so they would each have a copy handed down to them when they get older. The illustrations are colorful and festive and the text is lively and fun. My seven year old likes to plot, while my 16 month old loves the colors and animals in the book.

A book both kids and parents will love!
By 1mom3kids
I agree that this book has just enough suspense to make it a little scary. As a parent, I love it, because it has some parental humor in it as well. For example, when the pumpkin threatens Mrs. McMurphy, first she floats it down a river to get rid of it, and then she mails it to Alaska. It's adorable, and it's a fall favorite for my three kids.

What Is Time?: The Classic Account of the Nature of Time, by G. J. Whitrow

G. J. Whitrow (1912-2000) begins this classic exploration of the nature of time with a story about a Russian poet, visiting London before the First World War. The poet's English was not too good and when he asked a man in the street, 'Please, what is time?' he received the response, 'But that's a philosophical question. Why ask me?'.
Starting from this simple anecdote, Professor Whitrow takes us on a good-humored and wide-ranging tour of the thing that clocks keep (more or less). He discusses how our ideas of time originated; how far they are inborn in plants and animals; how time has been measured, from sundial and hourglass to the caesium clock, and whether time possesses a beginning, a direction, and an end. He coaxes the diffident layman to contemplate with pleasure the differences between cyclic, linear, biological, cosmic, and space-time, and he provides frequent diversions into fascinating topics such as the Mayan calendar, the migration of birds, the dances of bees, precognition, and the short, crowded lives of mu-mesons, particles produced by cosmic-ray showers that exist for just two millionths of a second.

This reissue of the classic and authoritative What is Time? includes a new introduction by Dr J. T. Fraser, founder of the International Society for the Study of Time, and a bibliographic essay by Dr Fraser and Professor M. P. Soulsby of the Pennsylvania State University.

Excellent Read on the Subject of Time
By Michael C. Boling
Time. We are constantly faced with the issue of time. “I don’t have enough time to accomplish that task.” “If I could go back in time, I’d make State.” (statement courtesy of Uncle Rico). What exactly is time? Have we ever taken the time to stop and think about time or is just something that seems to tick away for us from cradle to the grave?

Recently, I have been giving some thought as to the nature of time. In Scripture, the issue of time is everywhere. We are on a progressive movement on a timeline towards the end of days. One can argue that time became a construct for humanity at creation and before that point there was no such thing as time in the manner we understand it to be today. This of course begs the question as to what eternity future will be like. The reality is the subject of time has been a focus of civilizations throughout history. Many of those civilizations approached time in various ways. In his helpful book aptly titled What is Time?: The Classic Account of the Nature of Time, Dr. G. J. Whitrow walks the reader through this important subject.

Whitrow begins by examining how the concept of time originated. We clearly organize our days by a calendar and the passage of time and the ancients did the same, albeit in a different manner. I was very much fascinated by the fact many ancient cultures believed in a cyclical view of time rather than the linear approach of more modern civilizations. While Whitrow does not delve much if at all into how time was viewed in a biblical sense, the view of the ancients helps us have a sense of how time is presented in Scripture. We see a number of processes and cycles throughout Scripture. In fact, the movement of “time” from the Garden of Eden to a place of future redemption is presented as a cycle, namely that of redemption. We also see the cycle found within agriculture, cycles of rebellion and repentance. While these cycles move in what seems as a linear progression, in fact, it can be asserted based on the concepts presented by Whitrow that any linear movement takes place within the overarching framework of process and cycles.

Another fascinating aspect of this book is Whitrow’s engagement of the biological clocks subsumed within creation, both man and animal. In fact, we often speak of a woman’s biological clock. Additionally, we can observe cycles within nature that are repeated like clockwork such as the migration of animals to warmer climates at the onset of winter.

How we count time is also discussed by Whitrow. Throughout history, man has devised various ways to calculate the passage of time, not only within the framework of a day, but also over longer periods of time. Some of the ancient calendars and methods of accounting for time were quite precise. While some of Whitrow’s discussion was a bit over my head as it engaged quite a number of scientific facts that are outside of my knowledge base, the information was nevertheless quite fascinating and further demonstrates the importance of all things time when it comes to our daily lives.

In the concluding chapter of this book, Whitrow makes what I believe to be an important observation regarding the reality of time based on the studies of scientists. He notes, “Nowadays most of us tend to accept automatically the idea that time is continuous because we believe in the continuity of our existence. Until the present century it was also possible to believe in the continuity of matter and energy, but with the establishment of the atomic theory of matter and of the quantum theory we have been compelled to abandon those beliefs.” The fact of the matter is time is drawing to a close, namely to the end of days outlined in Scripture. Thus, a biblical view of time can be rooted in the grasp of time as a series of cycles within a larger cycle all moving towards a defined end point.

While Whitrow’s perspective is not totally rooted in Scripture, this is after all not a theological text. What one can learn from this book is the various points I noted in this review, most notably how the ancients perceived time and how that perception of time as a cyclical process towards a defined end determined by the Creator is a reality. What is time? If you have every pondered that question, take a look at this book. It just might help you appreciate the idea and reality of time. I can say one thing and that is reading this book is definitely not a waste of time.

I received this book for free from Oxford University Press and the opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Algorithmic Puzzles, by Anany Levitin, Maria Levitin

While many think of algorithms as specific to computer science, at its core algorithmic thinking is defined by the use of analytical logic to solve problems. This logic extends far beyond the realm of computer science and into the wide and entertaining world of puzzles. In Algorithmic Puzzles, Anany and Maria Levitin use many classic brainteasers as well as newer examples from job interviews with major corporations to show readers how to apply analytical thinking to solve puzzles requiring well-defined procedures.
The book's unique collection of puzzles is supplemented with carefully developed tutorials on algorithm design strategies and analysis techniques intended to walk the reader step-by-step through the various approaches to algorithmic problem solving. Mastery of these strategies--exhaustive search, backtracking, and divide-and-conquer, among others--will aid the reader in solving not only the puzzles contained in this book, but also others encountered in interviews, puzzle collections, and throughout everyday life. Each of the 150 puzzles contains hints and solutions, along with commentary on the puzzle's origins and solution methods.
The only book of its kind, Algorithmic Puzzles houses puzzles for all skill levels. Readers with only middle school mathematics will develop their algorithmic problem-solving skills through puzzles at the elementary level, while seasoned puzzle solvers will enjoy the challenge of thinking through more difficult puzzles.

Review

"Algorithmic Puzzles by Anany Levitin and Maria Levitin is an interesting and novel style of puzzle book. The emphasis lies in training the reader to think algorithmically and develop new puzzle-solving skills: the majority of puzzles are problems where we are asked to find the shortest distance or the fewest moves to get from A to B, or construct a proof that a puzzle has no solution. the book provides plenty of puzzles to keep even the most avid problem-solvers busy for a long time, all with varying levels of difficulty and different styles/contexts. The solutions provided are comprehensive and explain themselves in a friendly, constructive manner, complete with illustrations. In addition to questions and answers, a section of brief hints is also provided to assist the reader in their puzzle-solving endeavours." -- Graham Wheeler, Significance

Frustrating Kindle Adaptation
By T Mark W Bottomley
This book contains an excellent collection of algorithmic puzzles. There are lots (150) of puzzles in three difficulty categories. The book itself has 3 parts - the puzzle, the hint(s), and the solution explanation with references and a short history. The conversion to Kindle format was done poorly. You would have thought they could puzzle out that the three parts of the book should be linked so the reader can move back and forth. This is especially problematic as neither of the three sections can stand alone. The Pounstone books, Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?: Trick Questions, Zen-like Riddles, Insanely Difficult Puzzles, and Other Devious Interviewing Techniques You Need ... to Get a Job Anywhere in the New Economy and How Would You Move Mount Fuji?: Microsoft's Cult of the Puzzle - How the World's Smartest Companies Select the Most Creative Thinkers are referenced in the book and they got the connectivity correct. I would recommend the paper version of the book with 3 book marks. Fixing this frustration would raise my rating to 5 stars.

The above Poundstone books do have a small overlap with this book, however they are sufficiently different that purchasing all three books is not a bad idea.

Start with this book if you need to do puzzles for programming interviews
By Amazon Reviewer
My motivation for reading this book: preparing for coding interview puzzles.
This is the perspective from which I evaluate the book.

Conclusion: if you are in the coding interview game do yourself a favor and read at least the first 30 pages. Best return on investment, unless you already have specific training on solving puzzles.

I have at least 5 of the most popular titles specifically dedicated to coding interviews but I find that just the first 30 pages of this book are more valuable than all the other books combined. (This statement is limited to the general problem solving topics and not to technical trivia or dedicated computer science topics like tricky manipulations of a linked list.)

The first pages review very clearly the major strategies for solving "puzzles," which is just another word for problems. If you have a computing or mathematics background then likely nothing on those pages will be new. Regardless, in my case the systematic review of these strategies makes the difference between "I know that I should be able to solve this in minutes but still I run around in loops and getting frustrated" to actually being able to convert the problem space to a graphical representation that helps getting the solution in minutes even with the most simplistic approach of exhaustive search. Of course those 30 pages are about describing the progression of the more sophisticated strategies that, even though I have been aware of them all, are extremely helpful to see in a system.

Contrast to other books I've seen: other books usually start with the problem, then either provide the solution up front, or demonstrate one example of how you could start looking for the solution. Although such examples are more useful than nothing they still do not provide the key to coming up with the methods that the author does in the style of "let's try this." To me, even just a few 10-s of minutes of investment, many problems changed from "maybe being able to solve in an hour if lucky" to "get straight to the solution in minutes".

It is a pity that the academic education of many of us did not cover these techniques systematically as it results in a) losing out against those who are not inherently more clever but somebody taught them these strategies, possibly at the tender age of early teens b) we may be wasting time and coming up with lousy solutions for problems in our day-jobs as coders.

Now for the puzzles: the books starts with a list of puzzles, then has a list of hints for each problem and then a detailed solution. The solution is again explained in an easy to understand way and refers to the general strategies introduced earlier. Most solutions have a comments section referring to the history of the problem and providing references to other works where the problem has been discussed. Actually, the references section of the book is a treasure mine in itself.

And no, it's not dry and no unnecessary use of mathematical notation. It's something a 12 year old could easily comprehend.
And no, no unnecessary fluff as in so many books I endeavor to read.

Although I had a specific agenda in starting to read this book I'm positive that people with a more genuine interest in puzzles will find it equally valuable.

Kindle edition needs to be ... kindle-ized! Maybe buy the physical book instead.
By Thomas Ehardt
The content of the book itself is OK; there a lot of rehashing of things that have already been rehashed to death.

However, the Kindle edition is terrible. There is no useful navigation, and it's as if someone took a source document for the book and exported to a Kindle document.

There was a real opportunity here to make an extremely useful document; each puzzle can be linked to the hints and solution, and those in turn could be linked back to each other.

I really hope that the publisher will revisit the Kindle edition and make it useful.

highly recommeded
By Seeranie Thakurdeen
I highly recommend this book for high school, college and university students. It provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to research and write research papers. Before I found this book I struggled with writing research papers and received B's for my effort, after I bought this book and followed the easy to read instructions, I achieved A+ on all my research papers and ultimately my classes. I recommend this books especially for high school students because learning the right way to write research papers and the whole process of research writing takes time to master and should be learned while in high school so that when you enter college or university you know how to write the many papers you will be asked to write. Each page of this book is packed with good advice and need to know information that, if you read carefully and follow exactly, will help you achieve the grades you want. More than that, there are tons of tips and tricks that make the process of writing research papers more interesting, easy and enjoyable. I have used this book and the A+ grades I received on my papers are a testament to the great instructions and advice that guide you every step of the way in this remarkable book.

When needing to reference material or research questions, the book made it very easy to find the material or answers needed. I would definitely recommend this for any college student or even high school ages student.
