About the Author
Beyerl is well known as a Master Herbalist and as a Wiccan author of eight books. Having been a guest speaker and educator at events throughout the United States, he relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 1993 where he continues his work with The Rowan Tree Church which he founded in 1976 and The Hermit's Grove, a nonprofit educational organization, which he founded in 1992. Beyerl teaches herbal medicine and horticulture at Seattle Central Community College and a Master Herbalist Program through The Hermit's Grove. The Hermit's Grove is both the location of The Rowan Tree hurch and a 45,000 square foot herbal and botanical garden.

It's just Ok...

This book is just ok. I saw that it had a handy index in the back, so you can just look up the specific property and go straight to the page. But it is very light on the specific applications for each herb, and sometimes the applications are extremely vague, saying only 'Saturn rules this plant' or something to that effect. Also, I tend to like reference books that explain WHY each property has specific associations, not just the what. It would be an ok reference for beginners, or for those looking to compare or cross-reference other guides. But as a "Master Book" it falls very short of the claims such an ambitious title makes.

On the plus side, it doesn't needlessly weigh down each plant with a thousand generic properties like some other guides I have (seriously, not every plant can be used for love, luck, fortune, and connecting to spirits).

My favorite metaphysical guide is "Love Is In The Earth". It's purely minerals, but the formatting and as a reference, it suits my needs perfectly. I wish I could find a book on herbalism that is like it.

When I first began my study of Wicca, one of the first mentions was of Herbalism and its importance. I realized I had no idea what any plants did at all.

I searched for a guide that was highly held by my internet peers, and this seemed to be the best option.

I received it in a timely manner.

As I began to read, I felt myself sucked into every bit of information. There are details on culture, on magick, and of course, the remedial properties of the herbs.
As a beginner, I couldn't have asked for more. It was everything I needed to get my start.

I found this book useful and I believe anyone who is into herbalism would find it useful. It has information on a good number of various herbs, both magical and medicinal. It does give some information on how to use them medicinally and magically however not in
great detail (that account's for a 4 star rating) but, still I have enjoyed this book. I gave it the 5th star on the rating because of the price. Overall I recommend this book for anyone who's into herbalism. :)

This book tells the story of a Dutch boy who grew up during the 1950s in post-war Borneo, where he had frequent encounters with an airplane, the Douglas DC-3, aka the C-47 Skytrain or Dakota of World War II fame. For a young boy living in a remote jungle community, the aircraft reached the proportions of a romantic icon, as the essential lifeline to a bigger world for him, the beginning of a special bond.

In 1957 his family left the island, and all its residual wreckage of World War II, and he attended college in The Hague. After graduation he started a career as a corporate executive, and met the aircraft again during business trips to the Americas. His childhood passion for the Dakota flared up anew, and the fascination pulled like a magnet. As if predestined, or maybe just looking for an alibi to come closer, he began a business to salvage and convert Dakota parts, which meant first of all finding them.

As the demand for these war relic parts and cockpits soared, he began to travel the world to track down surplus, crashed or derelict Dakotas. He ventured deeper and deeper into remote mountains, jungles, savannas and the seas where the planes are found, usually as ghostly wrecks but sometimes still in full commercial operation. In hunting the mythical Dakota he often encountered intimidating or dicey situations in countries plagued by wars or revolts, others by arms and narcotics trafficking, warlords and con men.

This book describes his multiple expeditions in search of the remains of the Dakota legend. It takes the reader to some of the remotest spots in the world, but once there one is often greeted by the comfort of what was once the West’s apex in transportation―however now haunted by the courageous airmen of the past.

Hans Wiesman takes us on an intercontinental crusade, country to country, island to island; and it’s fair to say his story could count as one of those likeable books you can pick up and put down as and when. By its very nature the story is episodic but do not take this as a criticism. The writing is assured and well paced and you can feel the enthusiasm of the author at the turn of every page. The photography is well captioned and, of course, the pix are all fascinating. Just about everyone has seen those internet snaps of Dakotas used by scuba divers and all this stuff and more is included in the author’s story. His passion is beyond doubt and his knowledge and experience in the field of seeking out aircraft could well be unrivalled. His contacts book must be huge and I presume he has to get people in to help write all his Christmas cards for him. The book finds a fitting conclusion with our man Hans helping to save the DC-3 now on display at the Merville Battery in Normandy. He gets the chance to mix Dakotas with his passion for Harleys and you cannot help but come away with the idea that this is pretty cool. In fact, if I needed to find the briefest of reviews for this book, then “pretty cool” would do it. I suspect the author would be satisfied with that if he ever finds time to slow down. About the Author
Dutchman Hans Wiesman grew up in post colonial Borneo where his father worked as an engineer for Shell Oil. Growing up in the jungle, Hans was bitten by the Dakota bug at a young age, as the leftover cargo planes from WWII were the only connection to an outside world he had ever seen. 35 years later, while working as an advertising executive, Hans ran into a Dakota during a photo shoot in South America and was immediately mesmerized again. He decided to turn his passion into a full time job and has since been scouring the most remote regions of the planet on a quest to find the last forgotten Dakotas in the world

Great adventure, highly recommended

This is a most attractive book, - nicely printed and bound and with gold-embossed lettering along the spine. More importantly, it is an exciting book. The author shares his adventurous life - and his love for the DC-3 - with us in a charming, informative and humoristic manner. A free and easy childhood on the threshold of the Borneo jungle was followed by university education in his native Netherlands and a career in the corporate world (which included several spectacular aviation related events). Eventually, he set up his own business and started tracking down, buying and converting the wingtips of defunct DC-3 aircraft into designer desks! His quest took him all over the planet and he writes hilariously about his failures and successes in developed and developing countries, trying to do business with people of all shades of honesty. The book is illustrated with a wealth of interesting colour photos. A must for anyone interested in historic aircraft, especially for fans of the 80-year old DC-3 in all its shapes and varieties.

A must read for anyone interested in aviation, travel, history, and of course the DC-3 aka Dakota. From the very start Wiesman’s engaging autobiography takes you to another world not experienced by most. From his childhood in the wilds of post-war Borneo in the early nineteen-fifties to the far reaches of the final frontiers in the new millennium. You follow his quest and passion to find and obtain scarce Dakota wingtips. Traveling around the world he brings to life his experience. With a fantastic sense of humor, true passion for adventure, travel and the world around him you feel as if you are right there with Wiesman. You can feel his elation at seeing a Dakota no matter its condition derelict or still flying his passion comes through.

The Dakota Hunter is filled with hundreds of photos documenting the hunt and bringing even more life to the book. He ensures the reader understands the historical and often unstable political situations as he travels to destinations like Bolivia, Colombia, and Madagascar. A testament to this is the following excerpt from his trip to Thailand: “As they say, “Old soldiers never die, they simply fade away.” And that is exactly what happened with the derelict Dakotas of the Phuket Reef Squadron. They are gone forever, somewhere in the eerie depths of the Indian Ocean. Probably the best grave they could have wished for. They slipped quietly away into the abyss where no human claim nor quarrel can ever touch them again. I could not have dreamt up a better ending for these brave warriors.”

Highly entertaining and not just for DC3 fans. Mr Weisman has many interesting stories to tell about the interesting countries he has visited searching for DC3 parts. Some may see irony in the fact he only wants the parts to build office desks but there is much more to his story and his affection for the plane shines through.

Great Content but Poor Format

Jim Rohn is without a doubt one of the foremost success thinkers and writers alive today. I own a company that distributes all his written and audio / visual work and I have used his philosophy over a number of years to revolutionise my life. His message works. The content of this tape programme works, there is no doubt about it. The problem with this audio session is that the way it is recorded is not conducive to enjoyment of the subject. It gets tiresome and boring.
The premise of the content is as the title suggests, Taking Charge of Your Life. The set covers all the basics of Rohn's philosophy; The 5 Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle, How to Affect People with Words, Bridging the Communication Gap, The Magic of Persuasion, Leadership and Building a Great Team. Jim Rohn's success formula is centred around the personal change needed to create success. In essence this programme will teach you about making pro active, personal philosophical change. It covers all the areas needed to bring about such change. It is therefore very difficult to critise the fabulous content. It will change your life if you act upon the information.
The drawback to this programme, is that the material is presented and contrived within a studio setting. It is polished by Nightingale Conant producers. Anyone who has listened to Rohn live, through the brilliant; WEEKEND SEMINAR, MAKING OF A LEADER or CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED tape programmes, will be very disapointed with this one. Jim looses his spontinaity by being produced. There is very little wit, fun or off the cuff remarks that make Rohn one of the most brilliant public speakers, alive today. My suggestion is to forget this programme, the aforementioned prorammes offer the same message, but with a "Live" Rohn at his very best.
To summarise, the content is great, but the studio orientated "produced" style is not conducive to your enjoyment. I truely feel, that the point to an audio programme versus a book is for the listener to by fully entertained by the presentation, while still getting the content message. This proramme will bore the listener to death. If this was the only audio set Rohn had produced, you should buy it. As he has produced better audio sets than this one, forget Take Charge of Your Life and buy the WEEKEND SEMINAR, MAKING of a LEADER, or CHALLENGE TO SUCCEED. It will be money well spent.

Timeless Principles

I thoroughly enjoyed this program. Sure, the principles Jim talks about are pretty much commonsense, but its the way he presents them that makes them so profound.
Over the past year I must have listened to this program about 30 times (I do a lot of listening while I run of an evening) and each time I listen to it I get something new, get some new insights and perspectives.
Unlike the other reviewer, I actually quite liked the studio format of the program - it made me feel "part of the crowd", and not like the presentation was canned.
I highly recommend this program to anyone. I got mine from the library - so the price was deinitely right!!

About to become my "Bible" of nutrition

This review is of the fourth edition of THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL BOOK, 2007. There are lots of books in the market about vitamin and mineral supplementation but this one makes a better case than most that Americans, on the whole, should be taking a lot more vitamin and mineral supplements. For one thing, says author/researcher Shari Lieberman, the FDA's RDI's (until recently RDA's) are defensive measures designed to guard against certain diseases but not to enhance health. For instance, the suggested amount of B vitamins we need are calculated to keep beriberi, rickets and pellagra at bay, when many other health benefits accrue by taking more of these substances. For another, those usually minuscule RDI amounts are calculated for an imaginary genderless human being of about 160 lbs, truly a statistical straw person. Worse yet, the quality of the food we Americans eat is steadily eroding under the impact of over-processing, fast food, and soils weakened by generations of chemical (nitrogen-based) fertilizers.

So basically the author dispenses with the "common wisdom" along the lines of "Eat a good balanced diet every day and if you like, take a multivitamin-mineral supplement." Lieberman patiently discusses the role of every vitamin of human use and most of the minerals. This book held a lot of surprises for me. Did you know that Niacin (Vitamin B3) can help lower blood cholesterol? It is even called the "best-kept secret in American medicine," especially when so many people are taking vastly more expensive statins to lower their LDL's. (Many people take both Niacin and statins, and shrug and smile when the doctor credits only the precription drug for any improvement in blood cholesterol.) And men -- before you go to the doctor with complaints of a swollen prostate gland (which may be "BPH", benign prostate hypoplagia), try getting more zinc into your diet.

What I like most about THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL BOOK is its intellectually honesty. Lieberman backs up her advocacy by discussing the most recent and relevant studies of vitamins and minerals. Usually her suggested doses of vitamins and minerals are many times the government's straw-man RDI amounts, but really you have to read this book. Someimes the amounts of supplementation for a particular substance is about the same or a little more than the government recommends; and in at least one case I can think of (phosphorus), she recommends no supplementation at all; i.e., nothing compared to the FDA's RDI of a small dose.

So the reader has to pay attention -- gorging on multivitamins, B-complex vitamins and fish oil may do us more harm than good. Also, frequently, the form in which a nutrient gets to us is key. To help reduce cholesterol Vitamin B3 (Niacin) has shown to be helpful, but it needs to be taken in the form of "straight" Niacin, not the Niacinamide that usually winds up in multivitamin or B-complex pills. But ingesting the straight Niacin can lead to a flushing effect -- to counter that, it is necessary to take an aspirin half an hour before taking the straight Niacin (an easy habit for those of us who practice "daily vitamin therapy" of a small aspirin tablet each morning), OR to pay extra for "flush-free" Niacin. This book is packed with such helpful strategies and approaches, which make good common sense and are based on scientific data.

In fact, THE REAL VITAMIN AND MINERAL GUIDE has quickly become my "go-to" book about the benefits of the various nutrients discussed in them (there are also a few herbals the author discusses and approves of). If the recommendations in this book continue to work for me as well as they have for the past several months of implementation, it may well become my "bible" of greater health. Highly recommended. This book has a history of slipping in and out of print, so don't be afraid to go for a good used copy as long as it is fairly recent.

Beware!

I bought this book to round out my knowledge of supplements. I have been taking supplements for 15 years based on the advice of my dietician and have purchased many books on the topic in the interim (my favourite that of Phyllis Balch's).

This book frightened me. The author did not inform the readers in her book about the side effects of the supplements. I found this irresponsible. For example, I was surprised that she did not mention that too much vitamin A causes overt psychosis, liver damage and even death (the reason that the Inuit who traditionally ate bear meat never ate its liver, a fact corroborated decades ago by science), that too much vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, that D-Ribose, a substance extracted from mastic, spurs action from the ovaries (Yemenite jews traditionally used it for women's fertility) and should be used with caution by women taking conventional fertility treatments and menopausal women and patients in hospital have gone into toxic shock when mistakenly overdosed with magnesium through the magnesium pump. The assertion that any side effects caused by over-supplementation are reversible by just ceasing supplementation is ludicrous and dangerous! There are just too many examples of lack of full disclosure of side effects to list.

I wanted a book that would round out my knowledge but this book to me felt like a big push to buy, buy, buy supplements. Although Shari Lieberman advocated cancer prevention and treatment through supplementation in this book, she herself died of cancer at age 51. Beware!

I checked it out of the local library first just to see if it fit my informational needs. The book was so full of great information that I wanted to have a copy of my own so I could mark it up as I read it. To my surprise, there was an updated version with more than 80 extra pages. I write on health issues so I will include it as a resource for my readers. Understanding vitamins and minerals and their synergistic relationships to the various metabolic mechanisms going on all the time inside the body is clearly examined in this well written, well researched book. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the whole picture of what brings about good health.

Until recently, few archaeologists working in and around the Inca heartland conducted archaeological research into the period between AD 1000 and AD 1400, leaving a great divide between pre-Inca archaeology and Inca studies.

In How the Incas Built Their Heartland R. Alan Covey supplements an archaeological approach with the tools of a historian, forming an interdisciplinary study of how the Incas became sufficiently powerful to embark on an unprecedented campaign of territorial expansion and how such developments related to earlier patterns of Andean statecraft. In roughly a hundred years of military campaigns, Inca dominion spread like wildfire across the Andes, a process traditionally thought to have been set in motion by a single charismatic ruler, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. Taking nearly a century of archaeological research in the region around the Inca capital as his point of departure, Covey offers an alternative description of Inca society in the centuries leading up to imperial expansion. To do so, Covey proposes a new reading of the Spanish chronicles, one that focuses on processes, rather than singular events, occurring throughout the region surrounding Cusco, the Inca capital. His focus on long-term regional changes, rather than heroic actions of Inca kings, allows the historical and archaeological evidence to be placed on equal interpretive footing. The result is a narrative of Inca political origins linking Inca statecraft to traditions of Andean power structures, long-term ecological changes, and internal social transformations. By reading the Inca histories in a compatible way, Covey shows that it is possible to construct a unified theory of how the Inca heartland was transformed after AD 1000.

I'm CPA in France and I would like to improve my vocabulary in english finance (by the way, with the book you can also free download the mp3 files of the book, and it's a good idea to improve your oral comprehension). I discovered this book and it was a great surprise. Very clear, easy to read and to understand. You can read this comics in less than one hour, and after balance sheet, income statement and other cash flow won't have any secret for you !

A novel way to teach finance to anyone

Wow! A graphic novel and a first class overview of finance in one easy to read package...Who would have thought?

I learned more about finance from this amazing comic book than I learned in a semester class in college. Fun to read, easy to understand, Financial Intelligence from Smarter Comics is a great tool to help every employee in my organization understand the bottom line and how we get there. Thanks Karen Berman and Joe Knight for a tremendous training tool that will clearly help my company grow.

About the Author
Susan Benjamin is a candy historian and owner of True Treats Candy, the nation’s only research-based historic candy company. The first thing you notice about Case Study Houses: The Complete CSH Program, 1945-1966 is its size: it's big. Contained within its 16-inch frame is the history of Arts & Architecture magazine's famed program created to inspire the building of low-cost modern homes in America. The brainchild of magazine editor John Entenza, the program drew well-known architects including Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen, and Richard Neutra. Throughout the book are spectacular photographs of modernist glass- and patio-filled homes. Most of the homes were built in the Los Angeles area and make wonderful use of the surrounding scenery. A 17-foot-tall front door opens up onto a canal; streamlined Herman Miller furniture fills out a living room that overlooks a breathtaking panorama. While not all the projects were built, each received a detailed spread in the magazine, including drawings and models. Some of the architectural drawings are lovely, drawn with the movement and fluidity of a master. Included are short biographies of each architect, a provocative epilogue by photographer Julius Shulman, and the reprinted original magazine pages that announce the birth of the Case Study idea. About the Author
Elizabeth A. T. Smith is the former Chief Curator and Deputy Director for programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Previously a curator at MOCA Los Angeles, where she organized "Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses," Smith has taught at the University of Southern California and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. She has curated numerous exhibitions and published widely on various aspects of contemporary art and architecture.

Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. For TASCHEN he published monographs on Julius Shulman, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner and Richard Neutra as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture Series.

A resident of Los Angeles since 1920, Julius Shulman documented modernist architecture in Southern California and across the globe for nearly eight decades. His images of Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 (1960) in Los Angeles and Richard J. Neutra's Kaufmann House (1947) in Palm Springs are among the most recognizable and iconic architectural photographs of the 20th century. Shulman's interest in photography developed into a career when he photographed Neutra's Kun Residence in Los Angeles with his Kodak Vestpocket camera in 1936. Neutra admired young Shulman's images and continued to commission his work. Other leading architects of the time followed suit, as did hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and book publishers. Shulman's numerous awards include the Architectural Photography Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1969), a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York (1998), and honorary doctorates from various academic institutions. He died on July 15, 2009 at the age of 98.

My "SHOW OFF" Book

This book is the next best thing to standing inside any of the Case Study Houses. I must admit, I use this book not only for reference, but to show off to anyone who comes to my house. This book tells my visitors that I love modernism, and that the Case Study Houses of California are some of my favorite houses in the world. If you feel the same, then you should also buy this book. If you just want to learn a little about the Case Study Houses, then Case Study Houses: 1945-1966: The California Impetus (Taschen Basic Architecture) is a great concise book. I received that one as a gift. At first I thought I wouldn't need it because I already have the jumbo book, but if I need to find out a quick piece of information I can usually go to the smaller book and find it more quickly. In conclusion, this is one of the top three most important books on architecture that I own.

I have been familiar with the Case Study Houses for years and downloaded the articles linked to the Wikipedia website. This book is a encyclopedic look at this program and is well worth the money. The book is printed on heavy, large format pages and even had a plastic dust jacket.

A worthy book equal to its size

I ordered this book and then had to wait eight months for it to arrive from Amazon as it was back-ordered. It was well worth the wait as it's one of the definitive books on modern architecture. I saw this book while visiting a design center in Palm Springs several years ago and just had to have it. All of the "masters" are in the book and a number of the original floor plans and details are shown. Also, a significant number of photos were taken by legendary photographer Julius Shulman. If you want to display this book on your coffee table, make sure it's strong enough to support it, as this book is huge.
For anyone remotely interested in mid-century architecture or everyone who wishes to experience what life was like over fifty years ago, this book is for you. You won't be disappointed in this fabulous book. Grab a cup of coffee (or tea), a comfy chair, and prepare to spend the better part of an afternoon reading a few of the Case Study Houses showcased in this worthy book.
