About the Author
Bibek Debroy is a member of Niti Aayog. He is an economist who has published popular articles, papers and books on economics. He also writes on Indology and Sanskrit. Penguin published Sarama and Her Children: The Dog in Indian Myth in 2008 and his translation of the Bhagavad Gita in 2006. Bibek Debroy was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015.

Accurate to the Critical Edition but not an easy read.

I am thoroughly enjoying this read, but it is slow going. It is accurate to the Critical Edition which is good for scholars possibly, but it is not fluid or beautiful to read. For example, Arjuna and every other character has an abundance of names, so throughout the text Bibek has the alternate name in the text with a footnote telling you that the character you have never heard of before is.....Arjuna. Again, and again, and again. For every character. Couldn't he have just put Arjuna, Indra, Bhishma etc in for us so we can just read the text without looking at the bottom of the page constantly? I really wanted to read the complete text, and I believe this is the best version for that at the moment in modern English (2015), but once I finish this monster I will sell it and get Ramesh Menon's version since I just got his version of the Bhagavata Purana and it is very enjoyable to read and the physical presentation is beautiful so the whole experience is warm and magical to me. Bibek is an economist so it makes sense that this is a perfectly accurate, yet cold and heartless translation. The stories themselves shine through but you have to polish it with your imagination.

Grade 5-9-In this well-organized and thorough resource, Trumble delves into the people, legends, and politics surrounding the creation and ruin of the largest library in the ancient world. The chapter on collecting books details its methods of acquisition, which ranged from payment to thievery. A section on Alexandria's competitor, Pergamum, located in Asia Minor, provides an opportunity to describe and contrast the use of parchment and papyrus. Much attention is paid to the scholars who utilized the library and their achievements. For example, Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth. Herophilus practiced dissection and probably vivisection, adding much to contemporary understanding of the function of human organs and systems. Back matter includes maps, the Ptolemy family tree, and a description of sites in ancient Alexandria. The full-color, single-page illustrations, rendered in watercolor and gouache, are uneven. Marshall is more successful at depicting the flow of fabric, architectural ornamentation, and inanimate objects than in capturing the proportions and physicality of the human body. The modern-day Bibliotheca Alexandrina, an institution inspired by its ancient predecessor, is given only a brief mention. These flaws notwithstanding, this book is a unique and timely celebration of the age-old passion for and preservation of ideas.

Gr. 5-7. It's hard to find an untouched topic in children's nonfiction, but this comes close. The library at Alexandria was the most famous in the ancient world, a center of learning, a place where much original research in astronomy, anatomy, mathematics, and science was done. Trumble begins with Alexander, who wanted to build a great city in Egypt, but died before it was finished. It was one of his successors who built the library and stocked it with a vast collection of books, some obtained through nefarious means. Succeeding chapters describe the research done at the site, the most interesting, perhaps, being the work of Herophilus, who became an expert in human anatomy by practicing vivisection in order to learn more. Some of the attractively illustrated, full-page color paintings are full of activity; others are more stilted, simply showing people in discussion. In either case, however, the art has a younger feel than the strong, interesting text. A useful support for curriculum. Ilene Cooper

An exceptionally vivid presentation

Robina MacIntyre Marshall's fine drawings lend to this outstanding survey of the Library of Alexandria - which was much more than a simple repository of books. Scholars who visited the Library dissected corpses, star-gazed, and had controversial discussions speculating about science, nature and the world. Their findings would change world knowledge. An exceptionally vivid presentation, Kelly Trumble's Library Of Alexandria would make a popular and welcome addition to both school and community library collections.

Engaging Read, Interesting Illustrations & Vignettes, Links Past to Today

As I am not a trained artist, I disagree with the other reviewer. I think the illustrations add to the imagination of the young reader and enhance their memory of the material presented in the book. For a student who "hates" history or "hates" to read, I think this is a true find! I think it is a very interesting read for a young person (upper elementary through middle school and even a low reading highschooler or for a quick read for a highschooler.) It ties together the general overview of ancient history that they should be learning and ties in interesting vignettes. Having taught middle school level ancient world history, I wish I would have had this book when I was teaching. It is a bit slanted regarding who did what destruction (Christians vs. Muslims) but a thinking reader who checks their sources' origins, fact checks and reads more than one source on an era for a balanced view (as all of us should), I think it is a fine addition to any study of the ancient world. I like how the author continually tied her information to its impact on the modern world. Included lots of "memory hooks" to help a student organize their understanding of the era in their mind.

Trumbell's 'Library of Alexandria'

This text is an excellent overview of the libraries history of contributions to the human condition. The illustrations are frequent and very lively additions to the work. I did notice two small details that don't fit with my knowledge of Greek history, but they are minor and need not be discussed here. Further, while some introductions function well for adults, this is not such an introduction; the material is really meant for adolescents, and, in this respect, it is wonderful.

About the Author

Bruce Barnbaum, of Granite Falls, WA, began photography as a hobbyist in the 1960s, and after four decades, it is still his hobby. Photography has also been his life's work for the past 40 years.

Bruce's educational background includes Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mathematics from UCLA. After working for several years as a mathematical analyst and computer programmer for missile guidance systems, he abruptly left the field and turned to photography.

Bruce is recognized as one of the finest darkroom printers on this planet, both for his exceptional black-and-white work, as well as for his color imagery. He understands light to an extent rarely found and combines this understanding with mastery of composition, applying his knowledge to an extraordinarily wide range of subject matter.

Bruce has authored several books, some of which have become classics. His early publication of The Art of Photography: An Approach to Personal Expression (first published in1994 and going out of print in 2002) was updated, revamped, and newly released in late 2010 by Rocky Nook. This new book became an instant bestseller and is sure to remain a classic for years to come.

Bruce has been an active environmental advocate for more than three decades, both independently and through his involvement and leadership with organizations such as the Sierra Club, the National Audubon Society, the Mountain Loop Conservancy, Futurewise, and the North Cascades Conservation Council.

Take the next steps beyond technique.

Most photo books describe how to take photos under varying conditions. Bruce Bamabum goes into making personal images, not by learning new techniques but by learning our own inclinations and, to use a currently trendy term, voice (my term - not the author's). Techniques and composition are mentioned throughout but not as ends in themselves. Rather both are put in service to personal vision and voice. As a friend of mine, Ray Ketcham says, "Anybody can learn your technique. Only you can make pictures that reflect your voice." For instance, we don't need to learn the rule of thirds to make "properly composed" images but because photos composed that way have certain impacts on the viewer. Is that what we want from a particular photo? Composition rules become composition tools in the service of how we want the image to display. Technical knowledge is always put in service to improving our craft not as an end in itself. Throughout the book Bambaum repeats the notion that photography is a skill and as with any skill practice, experimentation and making bad photos are necessary. Bad photos are not a negative, just something to learn from and if we don't make bad photos we haven't pushed out of our comfort zones. He makes the point that many of the worst photos he sees in workshops come from working pros who get into the habit of making commercially acceptable pictures not ones that reflect their vision. They forget how to experiment and take chances.

Bambaum covers more than just technique, though. He emphasizes getting instruction from multiple instructors and workshops (we learn different stuff from each), getting feedback or critiques of your photos and how to take that feedback, as well as how to learn from classes and such. Yes, there is a section on technique and gear, as well as a discussion of printing. Yes, again, those are put in service to making personal images not as absolutes or must haves.

Much of the book is relayed through the author's personal history. At times it's a tiny bit tedious but I don't know any other way to talk about personal process than personally. Bambaum shows a lot of his own photos. They are not all his most commercially successful images, rather ones that mean something to him and illustrate his points. That means that they may not all wow you, say, the way Joe McNally does. That's part of the essence of photography, too.

Good, but...

This is a hard one to review. The author is an acknowledge master of fine art photography, and if you aspire to improve your own fine art photography, there are some excellent tips in this book. In my opinion, however, it is a niche book. It details the author's story of how he got into photography, and why he prefers large format cameras (4X5 sheet film). Notbing wrong with that. He also details his preferred methods and techniques for taking/making fine art photographs, and his pictures are beyond reproach. What let's it down a bit is his obvious distain for any other form of photography. Not everyone is going to shoot scenics or abstracts, and haul around a van full of equipment, and take the time to set up each and every photograph with care and precision that the author feels is necessary. It is excellent to be reminded to check everything with extreme care, but most of us will shoot (and should shoot) more than the 3-4 snaps a week or whatever.

I began years ago trying to shoot pictures for a newspaper of football and basketball games with a 4X5 Speedgraphic. Great for fine art stuff, but horrendous for sports. We did this because the sports editor - still living in the 1930s and 1940s era, wanted large negatives for "quality." After a couple of years and LOTS of complaining by the staff, the old boy finally retired, and we got some 35 mm cameras with film drives. Our photography improved dramatically.

Finally, the author seems almost angry at times because everyone does not shoot as he does. He also seems determined to try at every turn to assure the reader that "good" photography is difficult, takes years to learn, takes incredable dedication to the exclusion of almost everything else, and you probably won't make it anyway. It would be nice to get a glimmer of encouragement occassionally. The author does recognize that some of the newer cameras might be used to take a descent picture - if you do all the painstaking work and take only a small number of shots - so you don't have to "dig through all that manuer assuming there is a pony in there someplace," and of course, go back to 4X5 film photography every month or so to refresh your techniques.

The author makes some wonderful photographs, but his technique and equipment are still from the 1940s era of Ansel Adams, and to that he aspires. For him there seems little room for anything else. I found this book hard to read. He seems almost angry that others would consider any other form of photography. It seems less about teaching others to make great photographs than about justifying the author's way of making them. However, if you aspire to make photographs like Ansel Adams or Bruce Barnbuam, and have the dedication to try, you should get this book, but do not expect anything but a very narrow "fine art" with large format perspective. Maybe that's the point, but...

I feel I'm falling in love with it and with photography

I'm just starting to read it, the book arrived a couple of days ago. As far as I have overseen it, I feel I'm falling in love with it and with photography, I'm starting to understand the basics of the process to become a Photographer. Now, it seems to me that I'm going to be able to improve on the very essentials of photography.

This book tries to provide a theoretical aprooach to peacekeeping negotiation. Despite all their efforts, all the authors conclude that providing a theoretical basis for negotiation is close to impossible and recomend a case by case approach, in which theory is left behind...

The definition of La Douleur Exquise is the heart wrenching pain of wanting someone you can't have, and this book from J.R. Rogue lives up to its title. The poems contained within the pages are heart wrenching, and soul consuming. They are real, and I felt all of the heart ache that Rogue pulled from the depths of her soul.I tried to pick a piece from the book that I could choose as a favorite, but the fact is that I found myself identifying with everything. There is not a poem in those pages that deserves more praise than the one before it. Every line written is as beautiful as it is painful, and I found myself constantly drawing from that pain. There is not one person on the planet that has never felt the feelings on these pages, and while reading it was a great reminder that we are never alone. There is always someone out there that has gone through similar instances. Beautifully heartbreaking

Beautifully heartbreaking words! For anyone who has experienced unrequited love or who has had their heart shattered by love This is for anyone who loves poetry, or even if you've never read a single poem in your life. It's (currently)set as a great price for kindle, so get it now!

I discovered her because one of my favorite authors posted some of her work on Instagram. I immediately fell in love with the sadness in her words and was looking for more of her work. I was so excited when I found out she was releasing a collection of her work and immediately pre-ordered this. This surpassed all of my expectations! I can't describe the emotional puddle I become every time I read this.

“I think I can feel it
most days
in the in-between;
you spell my name in strange
ways- b l a m e.”

You can feel Jen’s pain through her tragic words. It's amazing how intimate poetry can be, it feels like she gave us a huge part of herself. Her words read like a classic already. She is easily my new favorite poet of our time!!!

Thought-Provoking and Genuine.

"For every lover who has tasted the unrequited kind, too many times."

Before I even began reading the poems, from just this line, I knew this would be a great read. I connected instantaneously and the poems that followed surely didn't disappoint. J.R. Rogue writes in such a raw, honest way - it's beautiful.

It reads like a journey, rather than a random string of poems. It's very cathartic, I was completely unable put it down - at the beginning, I related so strongly to that heartache, but by the end I wanted to feel that same release felt in the last poem. I love that it's honest, I love that it doesn't sugarcoat love as something that is always beautiful and perfect, but simultaneously still offers the hope that things will improve and we can stitch ourselves up and continue on. Highly recommend.

Emotive poetry for those who love and have once loved

I'm a lover of the poetry J.R. Rogue shares for free on Instagram. I wanted to support and thank her for sharing her emotive words with us and purchasing this collection with the lovely, illustrated cover was definitely the way to go.

I thought I was going to read only a couple poems a day (ya know, spread them out a bit) but then I finished it in a day. No regrets lol. Although I will be returning to this collection again after I experience a heartbreak like these.

Great review books for step 1

Great review books for step 1. Especially Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, Pharmacology and Physiology are great. It contains all the high yield information. Compared to first aid these book offer a lot more information for understanding concepts.
I didn't use a book for behavioral sciences, just did questions. Embryology is good but for Anatomy I definitely recommend a book that has more pictures. The concept of the pathology part was not for me either so I used pathoma instead.

Good preparation books but they should be combined with Kaplan videos.

The books are good, the only thing is that the paper is thin. There were also pages with little portions stuck together and excess or smeared ink on some pages.
